MARION - Nobody within the Marion Blue Racers organization could be assured Saturday's Continental Indoor Football League regular season finale would have the ramifications of a league championship.
But following the Cincinnati Commandos 50-44 win early in the season, the Blue Racers players and coaches have been pointing to the return match.
"There is nothing really more to say now," Blue Racers head coach Ryan Terry said. "We have been trying to play our best each week, and it should be no different on Saturday."
The regular-season title and post-season possibilities will be on the line as Marion (8-1) and Cincinnati (9-0) take to the field Saturday at Cincinnati Gardens.
The Blue Racers will be hosting a first-round playoff game on June 6 against either the Chicago Knights or the Dayton Silverbacks, but they are looking for even a bigger prize.
If Marion wins by seven points or more it will assure itself playing the championship final at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum should the Blue Racers get to that point.
"We were able to take a lot from that first game," Terry said. "We are watching every minute of that game on tape."
"It is no mystery what is in store for us against Cincinnati," Blue Racers running back Victor Tolbert said.
Tolbert, who started the season with Dayton and played last year for the Marion Mayhem, is glad to be back in Marion.
"It was a really good opportunity for me," he said. "As a football player, this is the kind of game you want."
River Valley graduate Bryceson Lawrence also was not with the team for the first game.
"I am looking forward to getting out there and playing the defending champions," he said. "It all starts for us in practice, making each of us better, staying focused and competing every day."
"We are still getting better every week," Terry said. "The all-for-one and one-for-all attitude hasn't changed."
