CANTON, OH - The Ultimate Indoor Football League (UIFL) is pleased to announce the league's weekly honors for the week ending May 1, 2011.
It was a week that witnessed the first shutout in UIFL history and another team officially joining the playoff mix. Saginaw's 55-37 victory over Johnstown secured the Sting a spot in the league's four-team tournament. Meanwhile, Eastern Kentucky took advantage of an injured Canton quarterback and kept the Cougars off the board in a 45-0 shutout.
With their victory over Huntington, the Northern Kentucky River Monsters assured themselves a playoff home game.
Marcus McClinton was one of the key performers as the Drillers recorded the first shutout in UIFL history. He becomes the first EKY player to earn the Terry's Tire Town Defensive Player of the Week. The safety from the University of Kentucky had six tackles and two interceptions, one of which he took back for a touchdown.
For the second straight week, Ricardo Lenhart is named the Conquest Cards Offensive Player of the Week honor. It the second consecutive week, the receiver tied a UIFL record with 12 receptions. He has 12 catches for 120 yards and one touchdown in the win over Huntington. It the sixth time a NKY player earned the offensive honor.
For the fourth time this season, Dustin Zink has earned the Edge SportsWear Special Team Player of the Week. He was 5-for-6 on extra points and converted his lone field goal of the game. In addition, he averaged 46.5 yards on kickoffs.
The upcoming week features the top two offenses in the UIFL as Northern Kentucky travels to Saginaw 7:30 p.m. Friday. A River Monsters victory secures the top-seed for the playoffs. In other action, Huntington seeks redemption when they travel to Johnstown. The Generals recorded the 33-32 victory on April 16.
In the final game of the week, Canton hopes to avoid playoff elimination by posting a victory Sunday as the Cougars hosts Eastern Kentucky. The Drillers are still searching for their first road win on the year.
