The CIFL moves into key stretch of the season with a full slate of games. Backyard rivals tangle in Cincinnati, when undefeated and defending league champions, host Dayton. Chicago will travel to Marion to take on the Blue Racers.
Cincinnati sits in first place in the standings at 5-0, followed by Marion at 5-1. Chicago is in third place at 3-2, with Dayton at 2-4 and Indianapolis is winless at 0-6. Port Huron will finish the season 2-8. Details at the end of the article.
Dayton at Cincinnati
Dayton enters a key game at Cincinnati coming off of a 24-21 win in Chicago last weekend. In the first meeting between these rivals, Dayton took a 15-12 halftime lead and expanded the lead early in the third quarter before Cincinnati came from behind to win. It was the first time all year the Commandos trailed so late in the game.
Dayton is led on offense by quarterback Daniel Stover who is six of 22 with one interception this year. Stover has passed for 49 yards and one touchdown. On the ground, Stover is also the top ground gainer rushing for 87 yards on 12 carries. On defense, the Silverbacks are led by James Spikes with 15 solo tackles and 10 assisted tackles and Neimiah Simons, who has nine solo tackles and 18 assisted tackles.
The Commandos are led by quarterback Tyler Sheehan, who has completed 72 of 123 passes for 849 yards and 16 touchdowns. His top receivers are Brandon Boehm, who has 17 receptions for 232 yards and five touchdowns. The ground attack is also led by Sheehan, who has 30 yards on eight carries. Defensively, Torry Cornett leads the Commandoes defense with 14 solo tackles and 15 assisted tackles.
A win by Dayton puts the Silverbacks in position for a playoff berth.
Chicago at Marion
Chicago was riding a three game winning streak into last week’s game against Dayton. A win would have placed Chicago in great position for competing for a home game in the playoffs. However, the Knights could not capitalize in the fourth quarter and lost the game 24-21. Marion was idle last week. The Blue Racers are a half game out of first place.
Chicago’s offense is led by quarterback Ron Ricciardi who completed 39 of 77 passes with six touchdowns and five interceptions. The ground attack is led by James Chicon, who has 64 yards on 17 carries and three scores. On defense, Chicon has 16 solo tackles and 12 assisted tackles.
The Blue Racers attack is led by Josh Harris who has completed 51 of 96 passes with 15 scores and four interceptions. His favorite target is Mike Tatum, who has 14 receptions for 170 yards and seven touchdowns. Marion’s Mike Cross leads team in defense with 16 solo tackles and 15 assisted tackles.
Port Huron Predators
Late last weekend the CIFL was notified that the owner of the Port Huron Predators, Rachael Brusate, was leaving the team, effective immediately. Because of the late and immediate notice the league was put in a position to find new ownership to save the Predators season. A few failed attemps led to a decision to be made by the league and McMorran arena manager Randy Fernandez to end the season, resulting in losses for the remaining four games.
The Predators will end the season with a 2-8 record.
