Pirates win,get "Back to Business"
Among all of the vocal fans at the Southlake Pirates season opener Friday April 15th, Lilian Hall set the tone. "Back to the business" chants from Hall cheered on the Pirates throughout the game and established the theme for victory number one over the Texas Takeover.
The Pirates, whose last game ended in a controversial loss to the North Texas Crunch in last year’s IIFA championship, were ready to get "back to the business" and make another championship run.
Jonathan Baca started the scoring for the Pirates, finding the end zone on third and goal with 5:39 left in the first to go up 6-0.
Cornelius Houston and the Texas Takeover scored on the next possession to take the lead 7-6. The Takeover are local eight man team that just finished their season, filled in for the Conroe Jaguars who were originally slated to play.
The next handful of plays put the Pirates back up for good.
Southlake returned the ensuing kickoff inside the five, only to turn it right back over on the next play.
The Pirates swarming defense led by Derrek Wageneck and John Clark then sacked QB Fred Davis in the end zone to go up 8-7.
After the punt, Pirate QB Taylor Wallis only needed one play to find Ernest Mason and a 14-7 lead.
Southlake opted for an onside kick to follow the TD. They converted the onside recovery into a 22-7 lead, when Wallis hooked up with Anthony Saincilaire for the TD pass, and Mason for the 2 point conversion.
The Takeover would score one more time in the half before Pirate QB Jamal Ibrahim hit Mason for the 30-13 halftime lead and Mason’s second TD reception.
Ernest Mason continued to put on a show in the second half. The Pirates opened the third quarter with another Wallis to Mason TD pass to go up 36-13.
Jeremy Calton returned an Ibrahim interception to bring the Takeover into striking distance 36-20.
Mason would then put the game out of reach when he returned the ensuing kickoff and his 4th TD of the game to go up 42-20.
Wageneck added insult to injury when he stripped the Takeover RB on first and goal, then with a Southlake escort, ran over and through the Takeover offense for their first defensive TD of the season.
Rex Harper would find pay turf in the 4th quarter; along with another couple of late Takeover TD’s to bring the final score to 55-32.
The Pirates are home again April 29 against the East Texas Wranglers before an anticipated rematch with the North Texas Crunch May 7th.
