SAGINAW, MI – Special teams is almost a forgotten aspect of football. The Saginaw Sting can thank the “forgotten” phase for securing the 62-61 victory Friday at the Dow Center in Ultimate Indoor Football League (UIFL) action. (Game Stats)
Saginaw returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and had Canton’s game-tying extra point miss the target to help them stave off the Cougars’ upset bid. LaVaughn Macon took a first quarter kickoff 50 yards for a score, while Andrew Beaver – in just his second game – added a third quarter kickoff return for a 50-yard touchdown.
The missed extra point prevented the Sting from having a deja vu feeling. In the last meeting, Canton earned the victory when Ryan Brinson hauled in a touchdown in the final minute. Brinson was once again on the receiving end of late scoring strike, hauling in a nine-yard touchdown from Ray Marrow to pull the visitors to within one point. But the errant kick kept the Sting ahead.
Saginaw’s Tommy Jones was 17-of-25 for 177 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions. Beaver finished the game with six receptions for 93 yards and three touchdowns to go along with 78 yards on two kickoff returns.
Ray Marrow continues to put up huge numbers for the Cougars. He was 24-of-45 for 271 yards, eight touchdowns and only one interception. However, it was a big pick as John Jacobs stepped in front of a potential tying score early in the fourth quarter.
Tim Smith recorded nine catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns, while Ryan Brinson had three touchdowns.
Saginaw (6-2) will travel to Northern Kentucky on April 23, while Canton (1-7) hosts Huntington on the April 23.
