DAYTON — The Marion Blue Racers rebounded from turmoil-filled midweek to defeat the Dayton Silverbacks 31-14 Saturday night in Continental Indoor Football League play at Hara Arena.
Playing their first game of the season on the road and with Ryan Terry making his debut as the Blue Racers head coach, Marion won for the fourth time in five games and remain one game back of the league-leading Chicago Commandos.
Terry, who had previously been Marion’s defensive co-ordinator, took over for Demetrius Ross, who resigned on Wednesday.
Dayton struck quickly as Fred Cromartie took the opening kickoff back 54 yards for a touchdown, but the Silverbacks had a high time penetrating the Blue Racers defense most of the night.
The Silverbacks totaled just 107 yards in total offense and scored their lone offensive touchdown on a one-yard run by quarterback Chris Stanford in the third quarter.
Led by quarterback Josh Harris, the Blue Harris scored a touchdown in each quarter.
Harris completed 13 of 21 passes for 107 yards while rushing for 47 yards on nine carries.
He completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Williams in the second quarter and connected with Williams again for a 37-yard strike in the third quarter.
Williams totaled 77 yards on five catches for the game.
Harris capped Marion’s scoring with a nine-yard run in the fourth quarter. The touchdown was set up by an interception by Bryceson Lawrence.
Marion scored nine points in the first quarter as Mike Cross tackled Ronald Russell in the end zone for a safety. The Blue Racers quickly got on the board again as Christen Haywood scored on two-yard run and Tyler Lorenz added the point-after kick.
Lorenz kicked a 37-yard field goal, his league-leading fifth three-pointer of the season, in the third quarter.
Marion is back on the road this Saturday as the Blue Racers travel to Port Huron. The Blue Racers defeated the Predators 44-37 in the season opener.
