MARION - The Marion Blue Racers have an appreciation of what the Indianapolis Enforcers are going through in their initial season in the Continental Indoor Football League.
The Enforcers do not have a home place to play, meaning road games every week.
But that appreciation only goes so far as the Blue Racers need every win they can get if they wish to reach their goal of a league title.
Scoring four touchdowns in each of the first two quarters, Marion (3-1) rolled past Indianapolis (0-4) 78-0 Saturday at the Marion Fairgrounds Coliseum.
The Blue Racers stand alone in second place of the CIFL, one game back of the Cincinnati Commandos.
"We came into this game like any other game we've had this season," running back Christen Haywood said. "No matter their record, we respected them as much as the others we've been playing."
Assistant coach Derick Ross took over coaching duties against the Enforcers, stepping in for his brother, Demetrius, who was suspended for one week because of a league rule violation.
"It was not tough getting the team ready to play," Derick Ross said. "We wanted to set the tone early and put the game out of reach."
The Blue Racers did just that, on both sides of the ball.
Of the eight touchdowns scored in the first half, five came from the offensive unit and three were produced by the defense."
"I challenged our defense," defensive coordinator Ryan Terry said. "We knew we all had to play well, and I told the defensive unit it starts with us. The goal for the defense is to get two scores in a game, and we definitely exceeded that."
Ray Saunders and Ryan Palmer each recovered fumbles in the end zone in the first half and Bryceson Lawrence went 35 yards after another bobble. For good measure, Mike Ellison returned an interception for a touchdown in the second half.
"We had to come out and execute, and we were not going to overlook Indy," defensive back Bryan Williams said.
Haywood had a big game on offense, scoring three touchdowns and rushing for 57 yards on 10 carries.
Jerard Bennett scored a pair of rushing touchdowns while Lorenzo Best, Antonio Wells and Timothy Robinson each crossed over the goal line once.
The eight rushing touchdowns set a CIFL single game record.
"Our offensive line got after it and put it together," Haywood said. "There were some times I was not getting touched."
"We had two work horses (Haywood and Bennett) running the ball," Derick Ross said. "This game allowed us to see what we have and might need to do down the road."
The road is a key word for the Blue Racers. After playing their first four games on their home turf, they will play their next two games on the road.
Marion travels to Dayton on Saturday for a second meeting against the Silverbacks in three weeks. The Blue Racers won the first meeting 34-13.
