MARION - With one week left in an opening four-game homestand, the Marion Blue Racers are still putting the pieces together in forming a team identity.
That homestand ends Saturday at the Fairgrounds Coliseum against the Indianapolis Enforcers
"We have not established where we feel we should be," Blue Racers coach Demetrius Ross said. "We come back each week and focus on Blue Racers football, study our mistakes and what we did well."
The first two games of the season came down to the final play. But last week, Marion (2-1) broke out of the gate early in defeating the Dayton Silverbacks 34-13.
The Blue Racers scored 31 points in the first half, but were limited to just a 43-yard field goal by Tyler Lorenz in the second half.
"We don't look back at just one part, we look back on the game in its totality," Ross said. "We look at all three facets - offense, defense and special teams - that need to be tightened up."
Quarterback Josh Harris also knows it's a team game.
"The better each unit plays, the better it goes," he said. "It is a three-unit game and the more time we are together the better you feel."
Harris passed for a season-high 179 yards against the Silverbacks, and completed long touchdown passes to Mike Tatum and Brandon Williams.
"There are things we need to improve, but we are getting better game by game," Harris said.
Defensive lineman Ray Saunders said there is plenty of room for improvement
"We came out with a lot of intensity against the Silverbacks," he said. "But we know we can do better. The closer we get as a team, the closer we will get to an identity. It is a day by day process."
The 0-3 Enforcers, who play all of their games on the road, have struggled. They have been out-scored 220-30.
Ross said the Enforcers' slow start should be irrelevant.
"We are going to treat Indianapolis like any other opponent," he said. "We are not going to change what we do, but do what we do better."
"We're not perfect. There are thing to fix," Harris said.
Staying focused will be a key in upcoming weeks. The team embarks on its first road trip, against Port Huron, next week.
"We need to tighten up the little things and have better execution," Ross said. "Those little things will prove to be critical when we go on the road.
