MARION — The second half was not quite what Marion Racers coach Demetrius Ross would have liked.
But the Blue Racers won for the second time in three games, downing the Dayton Silverbacks 34-13 Saturday night at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Marion took advantage of the several Dayton turnovers in the first half in taking a 31-7 halftime lead.
The Silverbacks lost two fumbles, had two passes intercepted and lost an onside kick in the first half. The Blue Racers scored four times following miscues.
Dayton struck first with a 34-yard pass from Bruce Jones to Daniel Stover and the Silverbacks got the right back, recovering an onside kick at their own 21.
But following an incomplete pass, a bad center snap rolled into the end zone, and Marion’s Bryceson Lawrence, newly signed this week, recovered the bobble in the end zone for a touchdown.
Marion got the ball right back following an interception in the end zone by Bryan Williams.
Three plays later, the Blue Racers were on the board again as Josh Harris sailed a 46-yard strike to Mike Tatum. The point after was blocked, but Marion led 13-7 with 3:38 left in the first quarter.
Late in the quarter, Williams picked up another interception, following a tip by Lawrence. Williams returned the pick for a touchdown, but it was nullified by a penalty.
Dayton kept Marion from scoring as Reynaldo Simons had an interception at the Dayton 6.
But Marion’s Andre Troy recovered a fumble on the Marion 18, and seven plays later Christen Haywood stretched into the end zone on a four-yard smash up the middle.
Tyler Lorenz connected on the PAT and Marion led 20-7 at the 3:48 mark.
Stung by the onside kick several times this season, the Blue Racers pulled off one of their own as Antonio Wells recovered the ball on the Marion 11.
Marion capitalized on the play with a long-distance aerial from Harris to Brandon Williams that covered 38 yards for the touchdown. Harris and Williams added the two-point conversion and the Blue Racers upped the count to 28-7.
Holding Dayton on downs, Marion added a 34-yard field goal by Lorenz as time ran out to take a 31-7 lead into the lockerroom.
Neither team showed much of an offense in the second half.
The only scores were a 42-yard field goal by Lorenz for the Blue Racers early in third quarter and 14-yard pass from Stover to Melvin Bryant late in the fourth quarter for the Silverbacks (1-2).
