LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Alabama Hammers didn't have a pleasant road trip to Louisiana .
The Swashbucklers took control of the Southern Indoor Football League contest in the third quarter and cruised to a 67-35 victory before 3,500 fans Saturday night at the Sudduth Coliseum. The Hammers (0-2) got a pair of touchdown receptions from former Ole Miss and UNA standout Mico McSwain, and a pair of rushing touchdown from ex-UNA wide receiver Charles McClain. It appeared the Hammers had cut the Louisiana (1-1) lead to five just before halftime, but McClain had an 11-yard reception ruled a fumble in the end zone and the result was a touchback that made it a 40-28 game at the break.
McClain's 1-yard run would pull Alabama back to within 40-35 early in the second half, only to have Hammers quarterback Bill Ashburn's intercepted pass set up a 10-yard run by Bucs running back Ken Perry. It was the third rushing score of the night for the one-time Ole Miss and Southeast Louisiana star and the Bucs pulled away from there. Both teams had their chances in the early going.
The Bucs took an early 7-0 advantage on Ben McLaughlin's 28-yard pass to Mike Maciejewski coupled with Blake Bercegay's extra point, but the Hammers answered with a 34-yard scoring strike from Ashburn to McSwain on their first play from scrimmage. Former UNA kicker Kenny Spencer's first extra point of the night tied the game before Bercegay converted a 50-yard field goal for a three-point Bucs lead with 10:15 left in the opener.
Alabama took its first lead at 14-10 after a 37-yard drive capped by McClain's 1-yard run. Perry answered for the Bucs on a 7-yard run and Bercegay backed that up with not only an extra point, but a 56-yard single point when his ensuing kickoff sailed through the goal posts for an 18-14 advantage late in the first quarter.
Ashburn hit former UAB standout Willie Quinnie on a 25-yarder and McSwain on a 38-yard bomb to trim the Louisiana lead to 32-28 with just under four minutes left in the second. The Bucs responded with a 23-yard touchdown pass from McLaughlin to Maciejewski and another point after and a single on the kickoff had the Hammers down by 12 with 1:30 left before the half.
The Hammers are idle next weekend before traveling to Richmond. Alabama returns home April 21 for another showdown with Columbus at the Von Braun Center's Propst Arena.
