Many defenses take the field to the sounds of "Darth Vader's Theme" from the Star Wars films, some even have the swagger to match the menacing music. Not many have the statistics to back them up. The Huntington Hammer's league leading defense took yet another big step against the Johnstown Generals at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena on Friday night. No team before had ever given up just 16 points in a contest. No defense has ever held a team to just 33 yards of total offense. The Hammer did both in front of the home crowd to take a half game lead for first place in the UIFL.
Offensively, the Huntington Hammer posted a season high 52 points on nearly 300 yards of offense. Quarterback Martevious Young hit on three scoring strikes to receiver Kenny Davis just back from an ankle injury, and also had touchdown tosses to receivers T.R. Dues and LaRoi Johnson. The five TD passes marks a single game season high for Young who also added a rushing touchdown and a pair of 2 point conversions for a total of 48 yards on the ground to add to the 189 through the air. Huntington's other quarterback, Fred Ray also joined in the scoring with a touchdown run of his own as the game drew near the end.
The most impressive side of the score sheet features names that are becoming commonplace with those following the Hammer. Names like Portis, Kaltsis, Robinson and Fritz. The Generals backfield proved to be a crowded place most of the evening with combinations of the Huntington defensive rush meeting at the quarterback or ball carrier on several occasions. Linebacker Andre Portis recorded half of the teams seven sacks. Defensive backs Jason Allen, Kevin Allen Jr., Darius Pettigrew and Jarett Sanderson kept the Johnstown receivers to just six catches on the night and allowed just one pass completion to go for a score.
A big test awaits the Huntington Hammer on Friday April 1st as they visit Northern Kentucky to visit the River Monsters. Once again, the Hammer will be facing the top offense in the league and again will do it on the road. Northern Kentucky is averaging more than 60 points per game in scoring and is led by former NFL and University of Kentucky quarterback Jared Lorenzen. It's a little way to travel, but the Hammer is hoping to see some familiar orange and blue in the crowd when they travel to Highland Heights, Kentucky. "Anyone who has been around these guys, or has been out to see them play, knows what a special group we have. Those who have missed out on seeing them need to make plans to see them," stated one fan after the game on Friday. "We need to fill the stands and make sure that the team knows we are behind them." The next home game for the Huntington Hammer is Saturday April 9th in a a re-match with the Saginaw Sting. Kick-off is set for 7:30, but fans are encouraged to plan on arriving early to enjoy the pre-game festivities.
