La Crosse, WI: It is Week Six of the La Crosse Spartans' second season in the IFL but the franchise will be accomplishing two "firsts" this weekend and hoping for a third. The Spartans will take on the Richmond Revolution on the road this weekend, as the two teams will do battle for the first time. It will also be the first time the Spartans have ever played outdoors, as Richmond plays their games outside at the Sports Quest Campus in Midlothian, Virginia, while they await the construction of a new arena. The "third" first would come if the team is able to record the victory and move to a .500 record for the first time in franchise history.
The Spartans will hit the outdoors with a record of 1-2 after a dominant 66-28 win over the Kent Predators last Thursday night. Spartans running back LaRon Council found the endzone three times in that game and has emerged as the team's go-to back and will once again start this weekend. Now starting quarterback Buddy Rivera also emerged as he received his first start of the season and contributed four TD's of his own. Rivera is currently tied for third in the league in rushing yards (138), which surprisingly is only second-best among quarterbacks.
Richmond enters the contest at 1-2 as well after recording their first win of the season last weekend over Lehigh Valley. The Revolution, who are trying to get into the playoffs for the second straight season, outlasted the Steelhawks 48-45 in overtime to notch the "W" behind 110 yards rushing and three scores on the ground by a host of Revolution players. Spartans defensive lineman, Xzavie Jackson (Vidswap.com's Week 5 IFL Defensive Player of the Week) will have to anchor the Spartans defensive line against a potent Richmond ground attack in order for the Spartans to even their record at 2-2. Jackson currently leads the IFL in sacks (5) and blocked kick attempts (3).
