The atmosphere in Pikeville, Kentucky was electric Friday, February 25th with the anticipation of the Eastern Kentucky Drillers first home game. Â The crowd of nearly 3,500 embraced the boys in black as they took on the rival Huntington Hammer for the Coal Cup. Quarterback Allan Holland had another stellar game with the help of his receiving corps, completing 18-39 passes recording four touchdowns and two interceptions. Seeing his first action this season wide receiver, Matthew Barbour, had seven receptions for 85 yards and two touchdowns. Mr. Consistent, Aric Evans, had two receptions for 68 yards and two touchdowns also.
A dominant defensive performance by the Drillers however, had the Hammer reeling the majority of the game. Â LB Zane Cooper and DB David Jones led the team with five tackles each. LB Shaun Jones had three tackles and an interception, while DB Troy Cloud also came up with his first UIFL interception. Cooper and DL Shaun Lewis combined for a sack, and DL DeMarcus Brooks created a forced fumble in the end zone resulting in a safety. Defensively the Drillers were virtually unstoppable with the story of the game being the performance of DB Jason Conner. Conner boasted an impressive stat line including three unassisted tackles, created five broken passes, and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a 26 yard touchdown. Â The Drillers have all week to celebrate the win due to the bye week. Â The Eastern Kentucky Drillers will be back in action March 12th, 7:30pm at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center where they face the Northern Kentucky River Monsters, led by former University of Kentucky quarterback Jared Lorenzen. Â This battle of the Bluegrass marks the beginning of another rivalry for the Drillers.
