The Defense set the tone for the evening with five touchdowns as the Huntington Hammer scored it's first win of the 2011 season. The Hammer kept the crowd in the game with big hits forcing interceptions and fumbles. Racking up 21 points in the last five minutes of the game, the final score showed a 41-26 win for the Inaugural Game.
The rumble of Harley Davidson motorcycles in the darkened Big Sandy Superstore Arena brought out the Hammer Girls and as the fog rolled in, so did Head Coach Josh Resignalo and the Huntington Hammer starting lineup. A very supportive crowd was on its feet at the beginning of the evening in support of the Hammer, and the team used that energy to begin the season with its first win.
The offense struggled to put points on the board, but the defense stepped up to hold the visiting Canton Cougars to just 26 points, the lowest point total in the UIFL's young season. To bring an even bigger smile to Defensive Coordinator Michael Owens face, the defense added scores of their own on two interceptions for touchdowns by Kevin Allen Jr. and another by Andre Portis. Portis also joined Rodney Fritz in another scoring category with each having a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Kick returner Dray Mason returned a kickoff in the second half to within 6 yards of the goal line setting up a touchdown toss from Quarterback Fred Ray to reciever Kenny Davis.
Following the game, the players, Hammer Girls, and "Man in the Stands" Sweet Scotty Ace joined with members of the coaching staff and front office personnel in meeting with fans and signing autographs. Director of Team Operations, Mary Cerullo said, "Tonight went very well. We had a great crowd and above all, they really had a great time. Of course it's nice to start with a win, but children and adults alike were very positive in all they had to say. We are looking forward to continuing to build on this and continue to bring a family-friendly and high-energy event each and every home game."
Huntington's next game is against Eastern Kentucky on Friday evening at 7:30pm. The Hammer will look to hand the Drillers their second loss of the season in Pikeville, Kentucky. Director of Communication, Dan Fisher said, "It may not seem like much, but Driller President Rick Kranz and I have a little wager on this one and I don't want to be the one doing the push-ups!" The Hammer would like to invite as many fans as possible to join the team in Pikeville to Hammer the Drillers!
The next home game for the Huntington Hammer is on Friday March 18th at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena. Game time for the next home contest is 7:30 and will feature a re-match with Eastern Kentucky.
