Former Bulldog Moland becomes Hammers first signee from tryout
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Alabama Hammers coach Marty Hammond didn't come away empty handed last Saturday during his team's open tryout at DI Sports in Jones Valley.
Hammond has signed former Alabama A&M defensive standout Avery Moland, a Birmingham native who thrived at linebacker during his career on "The Hill".
"It just goes to prove that these tryouts can uncover some serious talent,'' said Hammond, who'll have another open camp in Nashville the second or third week in February.
"Avery is the real deal and he should be a solid contributor on this team."
Moland (5-foot-11, 236 pounds) was the Bulldogs second-leading tackler during the 2007 and '06 campaigns, totaling 132 tackles, 13 for loss and five sacks. In '05, Moland was third on the squad in tackles with six for a loss and scored a touchdown with a fumble recovery on a punt return.
The Hammers open the Southern Indoor Football League season March 20 against Columbus at the Von Braun Center's Propst Arena. For ticket information visit www.alabamahammers.com or call the Alabama front office at 256-551-2222.
