HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The first addition to the Alabama Hammers coaching staff needs no introduction. Kelly Fields, whose No. 15 jersey was retired after his record-setting receiving career with the late Tennessee Valley Vipers, will serve as the receivers coach for the Hammers.
"I'm thankful for the opportunity to come back and be able to help some guys try to move on with their careers,'' said Fields, 33, a Mobile native who starred at Alabama A&M and currently works as an assistant coach at Ardmore High.
"I enjoyed my time with the Vipers, but its Hammers time now."
In a career that spanned from 2000 through 2002, Fields finished as the Vipers all-time leader in receptions (344), receiving yards (4,174), receiving touchdowns (65) and all-purpose yards (7306). He owned 31 Vipers' records and 12 arenafootball2 records when he retired.
"Kelly cares about this organization and he has experience in the game," said Hammers coach Marty Hammond, who was a Vipers assistant during Fields' tenure.
"He was a heck of a receiver when he played and that's why his number was raised to the rafters. He's the kind of person you want associated with your franchise. He will be a great coach and teacher for the players."
The Hammers open the Southern Indoor Football League season March 20 against Columbus at the Von Braun Center's Propst Arena. For ticket information visit www.alabamahammers.com or call the Alabama front office at 256-551-2222.
