HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Alabama Hammers have signed a pair of players with local flavor and Arena Football League experience as they head towards the opening of training camp for the 2011 Southern Indoor Football League season. The Hammers have inked defensive lineman Brandon Johnson, a former Stillman star and Alabama Viper, and defensive back Darian Payne, an ex-Alabama A&M standout.
"Both of these players are great building blocks for our defense,'' Alabama coach Marty Hammond said.
Johnson (6-foot-2, 245 pounds) had two sacks and a blocked field goal in two games for the AFL's Vipers last season, while Payne (5-9, 200) had 62 tackles and two interceptions for the Bulldogs from 2006 to 2008.
