Racers football provides opportunity for players; looking for fans www.flcourier.com/daytona-times/sports/5712-racers-football-provides-opportunity-for-players-looking-for-fansThere is a new football team in town. The Daytona Racers are holding practices at Derbyshire Park and playing home games at Municipal Stadium.
The Racers play in the Stars Football League (SFL), which is a semi-pro league consisting of four teams.
The other franchises include Fort Lauderdale Barracudas, New Orleans Jazz and Michigan Coyotes.
The League aims at providing players another opportunity to showcase their talents and get a chance to get to the higher level.
"This is a big opportunity for players. The NFL always needed this and now we have it. This is like a Minor League in Major League Baseball. We often have scouts from other leagues, including the NFL, CFL, UFL, AFL, AFL 2 at our games looking for players," said Dahryll Brown, the Racers’ head coach.
Season runs through Aug. 26
SFL rosters have players who have competed in other leagues such as the National Football League (NFL), Canadian Football League (CFL), United Football League (UFL), Arena Football League (AFL) and Arena Football League 2 (AFL 2).
"The games should be exciting. A lot of players have played Division I college football and in other professional leagues. This year the competition should be strong across the board. It will be grind-out football," Brown remarked.
The season runs from June 30 through Aug. 26 with each team playing seven games.
The league has plans to expand to 16 teams next season. Twelve new franchises are expected to join. The league’s website currently has eight teams on it.
First home game Saturday
Daytona defeated Fort Lauderdale 26-13 on June 30 during the season opener.
"It was a heck of a ball game. We came out in the second half and were able to shut them down. We are now sitting at 1-0 and atop of the standings. It’s nice but we still got a lot of work to do," Brown responded.
The Racers hope to see fans fill Municipal Stadium. The first home game is Saturday, July 16. Tickets are being sold two for $20, $15 at the gate. Usually tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids ages 13 and under. Four home games are scheduled.
"We have a lot of entertainment on hand with a local singer performing at halftime. We have a lot of advertisement. We want to put on a good game and allow you to see some future stars," stated Brown.
On the field, the racers try to mix it up on offense and play attack defense.
"We want to give you a lot of excitement. Our offense is a basic pro set with some spread variations. On defense, we use the 4-3 and 4-2-5. We try to get after you and get the ball," Brown explained.
So far, a relationship between the Racers and community is forging.
"The community has started to embrace us. We will soon have some autograph sessions and a family day. We are trying to get out and let the community notice us," responded Brown.
Taking advantage of opportunity
The players are enjoying their opportunity and experiences in the league. They all want to get a chance to move to a higher level.
"It’s been great how the team has come together so quickly. It’s refreshing," said James "P.J.’’ Jack, the Racers’ quarterback.
Jack has spent time playing in Europe and the Canadian Football League.
"I’m glad to be here. I was called in to play later and was able to win the starting job. I want to improve myself and show the NFL and CFL what I can do," he added.
The Daytona Racers roster features locals in offensive and defensive lineman Lashawn Newberry and Linebacker/defensive end Justin Edwards.
Both played high school ball.
Trying to get to next level
"Both guys are exciting. They played well in our first game. They are trying to make it to the next level," said Brown.
Defensive back Quvail Thompson is from Orlando. This is his second time playing semi-pro ball in Daytona. He was a member of the AFL2 Daytona Beach Thunderbirds in 2008.
"This is a new experience. I have played in the AF2, I was on the Orlando Predators of the Arena League’s practice squad, and I played in another league. I’m trying to get to the next level. It’s always a pleasure to play so close to home where family and friends can come and watch," said Thompson.

Are you ready for some football? Racers to play at Municipal Stadium www.myhometownnews.net/index.php?id=82734DAYTONA BEACH - A new professional football team kicks off this week at Municipal Stadium.
Called the Daytona Beach Racers, the team is one of four in the fledgling Stars Football League.
Peter J. Huthwaite, commissioner of the Stars Football League, said he picked Daytona Beach as a location because the city is an "underserved market that would be good for football."
Mr. Huthwaite hopes to expand the league to eight teams next year and continue the expansion year-by-year across the country.
"People love football," he said. "There's no football outdoors in the spring coast-to-coast. We play in the spring, but this year we started in the summer."
Five games are scheduled for Municipal Stadium, starting at 7 p.m. July 16 with the Racers versus the Fort Lauderdale Barracudas. One of the five games in Daytona Beach will not include the home team, but will pit New Orleans versus Pontiac, Mich. Tickets will cost $20.
The Racers have already played one game, beating the Barracudas in Fort Lauderdale 26-13 on June 30 in the Stars Football League's inaugural game.
PeeJay Jack threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Robert Keyes for the victory. Jack has played for a number of indoor football league teams, including the Orlando Predators the defunct Daytona Beach Thunder.
So far, the Stars Football League has had some start-up problems. Huthwaite said he originally hoped to begin the first season with eight teams instead of four.
Approval to use Municipal Stadium for home games came after the Racers had begun the season with the game at Fort Lauderdale, when the City Commission voted unanimously on July 6 to approve a contract.
City Manager Jim Chisholm said a $1.4 million stadium renovation completed last year made it possible to add a professional team, in addition to the high school and college teams that use the stadium. The renovation included installation of an artificial turf, repairs to the elevator to the press box and replacing structural bracing to hold the concrete for the stadium together.
"The Stars are a new opportunity," Mr. Chisholm said. "They bring a new dimension to Daytona Beach."
Stadium fees to be paid by the professional league will help establish a fund the city hopes to use to pay for ongoing maintenance and upgrades to the stadium, Mr. Chisholm said. He said it's important for the city to maintain its facilities, rather than let structures deteriorate until costly repairs are needed.
Daytona Beach will be paid $5,000 per game, a total of $25,000 for a five-game home season, plus taxes. Taxes will be $1,625 per game, a total of $8,125 for the season.
In addition, the Stars Football League, headquartered in Grosse Pointe, Mich., agreed to reimburse the city for the cost of police and firefighters deemed necessary by city officials to ensure public safety at the games.

New Orleans Jazz First Game Ever, an Overtime Victory.
When Stars Football League, L.L.C. President and Commissioner, Peter Huthwaite, added the 1-2-3 rule to the league, he didn’t expect that it would become a significant factor as early as the third game of the inaugural season. However, Ft. Lauderdale Barracuda coach, Marty Culpepper, used this new rule to tie the New Orleans Jazz football team, playing their very first game ever, with no time left on the clock. This sent the game into overtime and the New Orleans Jazz eventually won the game 15-9.
The Stars Football League is playing in their first year. Their mission is to bring professional football to markets that are under-served by other professional leagues. In the process, the League provides additional playing opportunities for players that want to extend their outdoor, professional football carriers, but are not playing in any other professional leagues.
The League has adopted the NFL rule book with a few scoring exceptions to give teams a better chance to keep the game close. These scoring exceptions include a 4-point field goal over 50 years and the 1-2-3 rule for extra points. After scoring a touchdown, a team may elect to kick for one extra point, run or pass for 2 extra points from the 2 yard line, or run or pass for 3 extra points from the 10 yard line. This last rule was used by Barracuda Coach Culpepper to tie the game Friday night, with no time left.
The New Orleans Jazz scored a field goal early in the game and the game remained 3-0, with less than one minute to play. Then the Jazz scored a touchdown on an 80 interception return. The Jazz missed the extra point, making the score 9-0. Due to an excessive celebration penalty, the Barracudas began the next series on the Jazz 45 yard-line.
The Jazz moved the ball to the 16 yard line with 3 Seconds left. From there, Barracuda Quarterback Daryle Hooper passed the ball into the end zone where it was intercepted. The Jazz attempted to lateral the ball, but fumbled it. The Barracudas recovered in the end zone for a touchdown, with no time left of the clock. With the score 9 to 6, Coach Culpepper elected to attempt a 3 point conversion. Quarterback Hooper ran the ball into the end-zone to tie the game, when all of the receivers were covered.
The overtime was played using NFL rules. During the play, the Jazz intercepted a Hooper pass and returned it 80 yards for the final score of the game, 15-9.
Without the introduction of the 1-2-3 rule, the game would have ended in regulation time. Because of this rule, the Barracudas needed only one possession to tie the game. The final drive became relevant. The addition of these two scoring options helps to keep the game close and exciting.

Daytona Beach Racers “RUN” over Michigan Coyotes for their second Win, 38-18. The Michigan Coyotes, in their first Stars Football League Game ever, proved unable to contain the running game of the Daytona Beach Racers. “For our first game, we were very pleased with the ability of the offense to move the ball.” Said Coach Bobby Thompson. “In addition to 3 touchdowns, we had two other scores called back for penalties. We felt like we competed well during entire game. We will definitely improve for our next game.”
The Coyotes had to overcome more than just first game jitters. Travelling to Daytona Beach, via Orlando added an extra challenge. Their equipment was held up in the Orlando Airport during a thunderstorm, and they arrived at the Municipal Stadium in Daytona Beach only 45 minutes before game time. The kick-off was delayed, giving the Coyotes time to “loosen-up” for the game.
The Daytona Beach Racer’s game was highlighted by Anthony Gay’s 200 yard rushing day.

Football History was made When The Jazz-Barracuda Game Was Tied Using The SFL’s Unique 1-2-3 Rule.
History was made in New Orleans LA on Friday July 22, 2011 at Tad Gormley Stadium. No where in the history of football did anyone ever witness a game that would live for all eternity. The setting is as follows. The game was tightly fought with the Jazz leading 3-0, with 45 seconds to go in the game and the Barracudas deep in Jazz territory. Barracuda QB Daryl Hopper threw a pass that was intercepted on the Jazz 10 yard line and returned for a 90 yard Jazz touchdown. When crossing the goal-line, the Jazz player was flagged for excessive celebration. The extra point was wide right and the Jazz led 9-0. Normally, this would be a two possession lead, but not in the Stars Football League, with the 1-2-3 rule. The 1-2-3 rule allows a team to kick an extra point (1), run or pass from the 2 yard line (2) OR to run or pass from the 10 yard line (3), after touchdowns.
Due to the excessive celebration penalty, the Barracudas returned the kickoff to their own 45 yard-line with 43 seconds left on the clock. The Barracudas marched down the field and stepped out-of-bounds on the Jazz 16 yard-line with 3 seconds left on the clock. QB Hopper passed the ball into the end zone for the final play. The ball was intercepted, then lateraled, then fumbled by the Jazz and Tommy Conyers of the Barracudas fell on the ball for a touchdown, giving the Jazz a 9-6 lead. With no time remaining, with the clock reading 00.0, Barracuda Coach Culpepper, elected to execute the three point play.
With 3 zeros on the clock, the score was 9-6. In all other leagues the game would have been over. Dating back to 1879, no one has ever witnessed a three point play. But the SFL, this year, introduced the three point play from the 10 yard line, after a touchdown.
With no time on the clock, QB Hopper want back to pass, faked the pass to the right side and ran around left end, galloping into the end zone for the first, ever 3 point conversion in football history thus tying the game (9-9) and sending the game into overtime.
After the Barracudas won the overtime toss, Daryl Hopper, the star of the 3 point conversion, throw an interception which was returned for a touchdown and the Jazz won the game 15-9.
Commissioner Pete Huthwaite said, “This was the most exciting game that I have ever witnessed in my life. I couldn’t have been happier than to see the 3 point conversion attempted in this situation, thus sending the game into overtime. We will to finish the season in late August with more exciting games in the SFL. History is being made every week in the Stars Football League, America’s Spring Pro Football League.”
