www.news-journalonline.com/sports/football/2011/06/29/ready-or-not-racers-to-start-season.htmlDAYTONA BEACH -- LeShawn Newberry and Michael Boudreau grew up making plays on area high school football fields.
Now they're trying to do so as professional athletes.
Newberry and Boudreau are two of 55 athletes hoping to make the 36-player roster of the Daytona Beach Racers, one of four teams in the new Stars Football League.
If they make the team, though, they won't have much time to learn the playbook. The Racers just opened camp Friday and will have less than a week of practice before the season starts.
The Racers will play an eight-game season that begins at 7 Thursday night against the Fort Lauderdale Barracudas at Fort Lauderdale's Lockhart Stadium, a 20,450-seat facility where Florida Atlantic University plays its home games.
"It's really not enough time, but you have to do what you have to do," Racers coach Dahryll Brown said. "I was brought in in January and we've been assembling staff ever since then."
Founded in Michigan by Peter J. Huthwaite, the start-up outdoor league caters to players hoping to land in better-financed, higher-profile leagues like the Arena Football Leagueor AF2.
"It's for some guys that might have (gone) to college for one or two years that didn't have the opportunity to finish or showcase their abilities," Racers general manager Anthony Galloway said. "We have some good talent out there from the Daytona area."
The other teams in the league, which has a $1.5 million franchise fee, are the New Orleans Jazz and Michigan Coyotes. The league currently owns the Daytona Beach franchise.
Daytona Beach will play its home games at Municipal Stadium, with its home opener scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on July 16.
In an effort to spark area interests, Galloway said the Racers plan on retaining numerous players with ties to the area.
Newberry was a standout defensive lineman at Spruce Creek before going to Georgia Tech and finishing his career at NAIA Lindenwood University in Missouri.
Boudreau was a standout at Father Lopez.
"We've got one big kid in Newberry," Brown said. "He's been a factor on the O-line for us."
The coach is a DeLand native who assisted a Canadian Football League team in hosting an open tryout at Municipal Stadium earlier this year.
Like other alternative leagues, the SFL has its share of wrinkles: After a touchdown teams have the option of going for a one-, two- or three-point conversion. A standard point-after kick is worth one, a pass or run from the 2-yard line is worth two and a converted run or pass from the 10-yard line is worth three. The play clock is 30 seconds instead of 35 in an effort to speed up the game, and there will be no video replays to change calls.
· Field goals of 50 yards or more are worth four points and field goals not kicked out of bounds are returnable.
The SFL plans to add at least two teams in 2012, with its sights on teams in Los Angeles; Las Vegas; Little Rock, Ark.; Mobile, Ala.; and Charleston, S.C.

On Thursday June 30, 2011, the Stars Football League presented their first ever professional, spring football game. The game was played between the Daytona Beach Racers and Ft. Lauderdale Barracudas at Lockhart Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale.
The game was close and exciting as the Barracudas struck first with the first play from scrimmage. The extra point was good for a 7-0 lead. The Racers were unable to sustain their first drive, but pinned the Barracudas on their own 10 yard line with an excellent punt by Derik Arrington. From there, the Barracudas lost the handle on the ball in the end zone and J.K. Sabb recovered for the Racers first touchdown.
The teams remained evenly matched through the remainder of the first half and the half time score was 13-12, Barracudas.
The second half belonged to the Racers. They scored early in the second half, making the score 20-13, and shutout the Barracudas for the remainder of the game. The game stayed close until 8:11 of the fourth quarter. Pee Jay Jack (Racers QB), dropped back and fired a perfect pass 50 year pass to Robert Keyes in the middle of the field, at the 10 yard line. Keyes stretched out to his full height, catching the ball, keeping his feet and running the remaining 10 years into the end zone.
The coaches were please with their teams performances. The coaches indicated that there would be a lot of room for improvement, but were delighted with the capabilities and determination shown by their players.
Coach Marty Culpepper noted the great of his offensive and defensive lines. He was especially excited with the play of right tackle Juan Garnier (6’4”/330, No 77) and defensive end Willie Harvey (6’7”/270, No. 75 ). Culpepper also mentioned the contributions made by defensive end Brandon McCauley (6’6”/265, No 90) and wide receiver Jamar Battle (No. 2).
Coach Dahryll Brown of the Daytona Beach Racers was impressed with the play of Justin Edwards on defense and Anthony Gay II and James Sharpe on offense. Included with the stars for the Racers were J.K. Sabb, recovering the end zone fumble for the Racers first score and Robert Keyes great catch of Pee Jay Jack’s long pass to secure the game for the Racers.
Both teams displayed excellent defenses, as the offenses were unable to mount many sustained drives. Jamar Battle made several excellent punts to keep the Daytona Team deep in their end of the field during most of the second half.
These two teams will meet again, after the July 8,9 by week, at Daytona Beach’s Municipal Stadium on July 16, 2011. During that same week, the New Orleans Jazz will be hosting the Michigan Coyotes on July 15, 2011, in the Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans City Park.
It now seems clear, that quality professional football is being played this summer by the teams of the SFL. “We are looking for improvements in every area of the game and will be expanding to several new venues in the 2012 season.” Exclaimed league Commission and president, Peter J. Huthwaite.
