Indoor football coming to Fredericksburg? fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2010/082010/08072010/566992The Regional Indoor Football League plans to expand into this area next spring.
The RIFL announced yesterday that it has awarded a franchise to Virginia that will be based in Fredericksburg or Stafford. Team owner Alan Clark said yesterday he's negotiating with local venues for a home field.
"I'm trying to upgrade and help young guys who are trying to make it higher than where they are now," said Clark, a Louisa High School graduate who played on the RIFL champion Sarasota Scorpions last spring.
The RIFL had 10 teams in its inaugural 2010 season, and league public relations director Ray Damon said it hopes to add six more for 2011. The season begins in April. Teams play eight to a side and pay a maximum of $200 per game to players on their 25-man rosters.
The Virginia team already has named Brian Tolson as its head coach and is holding a contest to choose a nickname. The franchise will hold player tryouts Saturday, Sept. 4, at Clover Dale Park in Dale City. There is a $40 fee in advance, $50 for walk-ups.
Clark said he hopes to hold tryouts in the Fredericksburg area in October.
