Playing on the road is tough in any league, and the Southern Indoor Football League is proving no different in 2010 with the home team a perfect 10-0 on the season.
The Lafayette Wildcatters (0-3) are hoping to continue this trend as they take on defending SIFL Champion Louisiana Swashbucklers (2-2) at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the Cajundome.
Even though the season is only one-third complete, this game takes on added significance for both teams. The Wildcatters desperately need a win, and the Swashbucklers have played all five SIFL Championship games in Lake Charles.
With the Albany Panthers (3-0) and Columbus Lions (3-1) threatening to run away with the top two positions in the standings, a home-field playoff game may be out of the question for the rest of the league.
Adding even more intrigue to this game is the presence of two former UL players who want to make their homecoming a winning one.
Wide receiver Marcus Wildridge leads the Swashbucklers in receiving at 106.5 yards per game and Raymond Harris leads the league in all purpose yards at 178.5 per game.
Wildcatter defensive backs Jasper O'Quinn and Clarence Pendleton will have their hands full all night as the Swashbucklers throw deep 85 percent of the time.
"We are going to have to do a good job of mixing up our coverage's and we can't give up the deep touchdown pass," Wildcatters' defensive back coach Wendell Davis said.
Wildcatter head coach Skip Foster added, "This is our biggest rival, we are separated by 60 miles and we know they are coming here with every intention of spoiling our home opener. The Swashbucklers have been the number one team in this league since its inception, and we have to defend our home field."
Fans are encouraged to get to the Cajundome early — doors open at 6:15 p.m. — and to watch for flying footballs as team president Ray Ronquillo has gained approval from the league to allow members of either team after scoring a touchdown to throw the ball in the stands.
Bag of Donuts band will perform from 6:30 p.m. until kickoff, at halftime, and after the game, and New Orleans Saints Hall of Famer Ricky Jackson will be available after the game to sign autographs.
