The reality of the season being about six weeks away is starting to set in for Teri Carr.
The Tri-Cities Fever co-owner and general manager is in San Antonio this week for the Indoor Football League owners meetings while putting the final touches on the upcoming season. She says no major changes for the Fever or league-changing moves are expected.
If anything, the meetings are a good reminder that the clock is ticking.
"You always wish you had a little more time, but I am getting excited," she said. "It's almost here."
The Fever opens training camp Feb. 22 in preparation for its season opener March 8 at Fairbanks, Alaska.
Fever coach Adam Shackleford is also at the meetings along with several other coaches from throughout the league getting familiarized with the rule book, and acquainted with each other.
Shackleford continued to add to his roster for the upcoming season this week, signing three more players to bring his roster total to 19.
Shackleford added depth on the offensive line, signed a defensive back and a receiver, and expects more players to be added later this week.
"We're not ready yet, but we will be when we need to be," Shackleford said.
PRACTICE PLACE: The Tri-Cities Fever will call the Benton Franklin County Fairgrounds home for training camp, a deal Carr said was recently finalized.
SCHEDULE CHANGE: The Fever has moved its March 20 home game against the Kent Predators to March 27. The move eliminates back-to-back bye weeks for both teams.
EL PASO OUT: The El Paso Generals, who went 12-2 last season, will not play this season, lowering the number of IFL teams to 25. The league had 19 teams in 2009.
NAME CHANGE: The Odessa Roughnecks, under new ownership, have changed their name to the West Texas Roughnecks.
WALKER IS BACK: Former Fever coach Cedric Walker was hired as the Milwaukee Iron's defensive coordinator, reunited with coach Bob Landslee in the Arena Football One league. Walker, who guided the Fever to a 4-12 record in 2008, was the defensive coordinator for Landslee last season in Green Bay.
TWO PREDATORS: The Arctic Predators based in Wasilla, Alaska, have been accepted into the American Indoor Football Association for the 2010 season. Wasilla was originally going to play in the IFL, but the owners made a last-second decision and moved the team to Kent, keeping the Predators nickname. Wasilla will likely be placed in a western division with expansion franchises in Yakima and Wenatchee.
