The Maryland Maniacs ran their Indoor Football League winning streak to nine consecutive games on Friday night with a dramatic finish in Saginaw, Mich.
Terry Moss ran 34 yards for a touchdown with 8 seconds remaining to lift the Maniacs to a 26-25 victory against the Saginaw Sting. The play capped a wild final minute of the game that saw the teams trade touchdowns in a span of 33 seconds.
Saginaw's Ruben Gay had a 3-yard touchdown run with 41 seconds left to play, but Gay was stopped short of the goal line on a two-point conversion attempt, leaving the Sting with a 25-20 lead.
On their ensuing possession, the Maniacs started at their 5-yard line. Quarterback Bryson Spinner hit Darryl Overton for an 11-yard gain, but two incomplete passes followed, leaving Maryland with a third and 10 on its 16-yard line. That's when they gave the ball to Moss, who took it 34 yards into the end zone.
With six seconds left, the Sting took over at their 25-yard line. Two consecutive penalties pushed them back 10 yards, and on the final play of the game Saginaw kicker Anthony Gallagher missed a 52-yard field goal that would have given the Sting a victory.
As they had done in the teams' last meeting on May 16 at Show Place Arena, the Sting forged a two-score lead on the Maniacs. In that game, Saginaw jumped ahead 13-0 before the Maniacs scored 40 unanswered points en route to a 40-13 victory.
The Maniacs improved to 9-2 and are in first place in the IFL's United Conference Atlantic Division. The team returns to action at Show Place Arena against the Muskegon Thunder at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday.
