The Cincinnati Commandos scored the game's final 20 points to complete an undefeated regular season with a 50-20 win against the second-place Marion Blue Racers (8-2)Saturday night at the Cincinnati Gardens.
The win gives Cincinnati (10-0) the top-seed in the Continental Indoor Football League playoffs and home field throughout, starting with Friday night's contest against the Chicago Knights (4-6) at 8:05 p.m. at the Cincinnati Gardens.
The Commandos are the first CIFL team to complete the regular season undefeated since the 2009 Chicago Slaughter.
The Commandos jumped out to a 16-0 lead on the strength of two Tyler Sheehan touchdown passes and Brandon Yingling's 28-yard field goal.
The lead remained 16 at halftime, 23-7, but Blue Racers quarterback Josh Harris ran for one touchdown and threw another to Marc Huddelston that helped Marion pull to within 10, 30-20, with 10:40 remaining in the game.
The Commandos increased their lead when Derrick Moss took a short pass from Sheehan 23 yards for a touchdown with 8:12 remaining.
On Marion's next possession, Pernell Phillips sacked Harris, resulting in a fumble that Terrill Byrd scooped up and returned 15 yards for a touchdown.
Marion's final three possessions all resulted in turnovers, including a fumble caused by receiver Nez Mincy following an interception that was recovered by Phillip Barnett in the end zone for a touchback.
Barnett completed the scoring in the game with his second touchdown grab, a 22-yard play as time expired.
The touchdown pass was the fourth of the night for Sheehan, who also ran for a score. Sheehan finished 14 of 27 passing for 157 yards.
George Murray was Cincinnati's top receiver with seven catches for 61 yards, Mincy caught two passes for 31 yards and a score and Barnett had two grabs for 29 yards.
Derrick Moss, who caught three passes for 36 yards, led the Commandos on the ground with eight carries for 38 yards and a score. Rayshawn Askew, the all-time record holder for touchdowns scored in indoor football, had nine carries for 28 yards in his first game with the team.
Marion was held to 127 yards of offense as the Commandos held a 261-127 advantage in total offense.
Additionally, Mike Tatum, the league leader in kick return average at 26.2 per return, was held to 86 yards on five returns, a 17.2-yard average despite one 36-yard return.
Phillips led the defense with 9.5 tackles, including 5.5 for a loss. Phillips and Byrd each had two sacks, while Corry Stewart and Jeff Franklin had interceptions.
