Richmond, VA: Week 14 for the Indoor Football League was full of strong competitions as some of the League's teams stake claims on playoff hopes and others' hopes faltered.
The Indoor Football League began Week 14 with the Tri Cities Fever at the Colorado Ice on Friday evening. In the first quarter, both the Fever and Ice were fairly matched with only a 3-point difference, with the Ice in the lead, 20-17. By the close of the second quarter, the Fever was able to take the lead by outscoring the Ice 13-7 in the second quarter, bringing the overall score to 30-27. The Colorado Ice came out of halftime with the goal of winning by only allowing 10 Fever points, while scoring 21 additional points of their own. Both teams played very hard; however, the Ice defense was able to cause more issues of the Fever offense. The Ice defense posted up 1 fumble recovery, 2 sacks and 3 inceptions for 71 yards. The power of the Ice defense and the productivity of the Ice offense allowed the Colorado Ice to defeat the Tri-Cities Fever, 58-54.
The second game for Friday evening was between the Sioux Falls Storm and Wyoming Cavalry. At the beginning of the first quarter, the Storm was able to get a quick touchdown to take the lead; however, the Cavalry fought back getting a field goal of their own. By the close of the first quarter, the Storm got their second touchdown, making the game 14-3, Storm. The Storm defense was able to prevent the Cavalry from scoring a touchdown in the first half of the game, while the Storm offense was able to add 3 touchdowns in the second quarter to the 2 touchdowns from the first quarter. Coming out of halftime, the Cavalry knew that it was time to pick it up to get back into the game. The third quarter was a fairly productive quarter for the Cavalry because they were only outscored by 4 points. Again, in the fourth quarter the Cavalry put up a strong effort by scoring 14 additional points; however, the Storm was able to score 21 more points. The Cavalry played strong in the second half of the game, but they were not able to overcome the damage done in the first half. The undefeated Sioux Falls Storm defeated the Wyoming Cavalry with a score of 70-30.
The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks hosted the Fairbanks Grizzlies on Saturday evening looking to maintain the recently winning pattern set. The Grizzlies started off strong, scoring 14 unanswered points in the first quarter. For the second quarter, the Steelhawks made a comeback outscoring the Grizzlies 21-14; however, the Grizzlies still had the lead, 28-21. After halftime, both teams realized the must play a solid game in order to maintain or gain the lead. With the two teams delivering a strong competition, neither team was able to score any points. However, in the final quarter of the game, the Steelhawks came alive scoring 16 additional points while holding the Grizzlies scoreless for the entire second half of the game. The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks were able to overcome the Fairbanks Grizzlies to win the game, 37-28.
The next game of Week 14 was between the La Crosse Spartans and the Richmond Revolution. The Revolution was hoping to get their first win since Week 4. Both teams started the game out strongly with the Spartans only getting outscored by 4 points. In the second quarter, both the Spartans and the Revolution were able to get a single touchdown, which meant that the Revolution was leading 17-13 into halftime. With the game still up for grabs, the Spartans came out of halftime looking to finish the game victorious; however, they were only able to score 2 more points than the Revolution in the third quarter. In the final quarter of the game, the Spartans pulled together as a team and posted up 15 points; however, the Richmond Revolution were able to score 16 points, which led to the Revolution's third win of the season, 40-37.
Saturday evening the Nebraska Danger stopped by the Bloomington Extreme. In the first half of the game the Extreme dominated the game, outscoring the Danger 28-13; however, the Danger still had two more quarters to play and still had a competitive chance. At the close of the third quarter, the Danger showed that they were set on winning by scoring another touchdown and only allowing a field goal, bringing the score to 31-20, Extreme. Though the Nebraska Danger put up a strong fight, they were unable to overcome the Extreme defense that got 2 interceptions, 2 fumble recoveries, and 3 sacks. The Bloomington Extreme capitalized on the errors of the Nebraska Danger and outscored them by 7 points in the final quarter to get the win on Saturday evening, 45-27.
The Chicago Slaughter visited the Omaha Beef on Saturday evening. Starting in the first quarter, both teams had a very slow start with the Slaughter scoreless and the Beef with a returned inception for a touchdown. By the second quarter, the two teams picked it up, scoring in the double digits. Going into halftime, the Beef was ahead 21-10. The Slaughter showed a stronger will to win in the third quarter. Midway through the third quarter, the Slaughter scored a touchdown, which was followed by an inception for another touchdown. The Beef was outscored 19-6 in the third quarter. After the Slaughter took the lead with an overall score of 29-27, the Beef dominated the final quarter. The Beef showed up to play by getting one offensive touchdown, two defensive touchdowns, and not allowing the Slaughter to score one point. The Omaha Beef was able to defeat the Chicago Slaughter on Saturday evening, 48-29.
The Allen Wranglers and the Amarillo Venom met up on Saturday evening. From the beginning of the first quarter, the Allen Wranglers looked to show their dominance outscoring the Venom 14-0. The Venom was only able to score 7 points in the first half of the game while the Wranglers scored 27 points. After being down by 20 points going into halftime, the Venom stepped up their play in the third quarter. The Venom prevented the Wranglers from scoring from the midway point in the second quarter until the bottom of the final quarter of the game. The inability of the Wranglers offense to overcome the Venom defense gave the Amarillo Venom the advantage and victory, 36-33.
The Seattle Timberwolves stopped by the Wenatchee Valley Venom Saturday evening looking to gain another win for the franchise. In the beginning, the two teams were decently matched, with the Venom outscoring the Timberwolves by 6 points in the first quarter. The second quarter was a completely different story; the Timberwolves took over the game, scoring 35 points while just allowing 17 points for the Venom. Though the score was 49-37 coming out of halftime, the Venom still had an opportunity to win. The Venom defense stepped up and prevented the Timberwolves from scoring and their offense scored 12 points, bringing the score to a tie, 49-49. The fourth quarter became a battle of wills. The will of the Seattle Timberwolves was greater than the Wenatchee Valley Venom because the Timberwolves were able to outscore the Venom 17-7, giving them the win, 66-56.
The next Saturday evening game was between the Wichita Wild and the West Texas Roughnecks. For both of the teams there was a very slow start; neither team was able score anything other than field goals. The score going into the third quarter was 12-9, Roughnecks. After 5 minutes passed in the third quarter, the Roughnecks were able to get the first touchdown of the game, which was followed by a Wild touchdown at the end of the third quarter. Both teams found very little productivity from their offenses: the Wild had 7 rushing yards and 97 total offensive yards, and the Roughnecks had 64 rushing yards and 76 total offensive yards. In the final quarter of the game, the Roughnecks kicked one more field goal, while the Wild was able to get another touchdown. Though the Roughneck defense was very present, the Wichita Wild was able to overcome the West Texas Roughnecks for the win, 22-21.
The Bricktown Brawlers visited the Arizona Adrenaline on Saturday evening. The Arizona Adrenaline had high hopes to gain their first win of the 2011 season. The Arizona Adrenaline started out the game dominating the Brawlers. By halftime the Adrenaline defense was able to hold the Brawlers scoreless while they racked up 28 points of their own. The Bricktown Brawlers scored their first points in the second half; however, they were only able to muster 6 points total. The Arizona Adrenaline exerted their will on the Bricktown Brawlers to win the game, 54-6.
The final game for Week 14 was between the Reading Express and the Green Bay Blizzard. This final game of Week 14 was a conference battle between the top two teams of the Atlantic Division, Reading Express, and the Great Lakes Division, Green Bay Blizzard. Both of the teams put up a strong fight in hopes of proving that they are the top team in the United Conference; however, the Blizzard was able to dominate the game, preventing much productivity from the Express. The Green Bay Blizzard was able to defeat their United Conference rival with a score of 72-40.
