With two weeks left to go in the CIFL regular season, defending league champion and undefeated first place Cincinnati move closer to finishing a perfect season. Yet, with two games to play, second place Marion, a game behind Cincinnati, could still claim a regular season championship and secure home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
The Commandos look to clinch a share of the 2011 CIFL regular season championship Friday night at home against Indianapolis at the Garden Center. Cincinnati enters the game at 8-0, while Indianapolis will close its regular season entering the game at 1-8. Meanwhile, second place Marion travels to Chicago to face the fourth place Knights. The Knights, at 4-5, close the regular season at home. For Marion, the Blue Racers must win to keep their hopes of a regular season championship alive.
Cincinnati, coming off of a bye week, host Indianapolis. For the first time all season, the Enforcers held a lead after the first quarter in their game against Marion last week. Although Marion fought back for lead, Indianapolis regained the led midway into the second quarter before giving up three touchdowns to close the half. Meanwhile, Cincinnati averages more than 60 points per game. In a game earlier this season, Cincinnati beat Indianapolis 82-2.
In Chicago, a key game will play out between the host Knights and visiting Blue Racers. Marion enters the game coming from behind to beat the Enforcers 73-12. Meanwhile, Chicago suffered a devastating defeat at Dayton last week 37-20. Regardless of the outcome of this week’s game, Chicago will wind up in fourth place. Thus, when the playoffs begin, Chicago will be traveling to either Cincinnati or Marion. For the Blue Racers, a defeat hands Cincinnati the regular season championship and secures a second place finish while a victory will setup a showdown with Cincinnati for the regular season championship.
