Amarillo, TX 5/1411 - The Amarillo Venom won in dramatic fashion Saturday night as they defeated the Bricktown Brawlers 50-35.
Derek Rasmussen got the start at Quarterback for the Amarillo Venom, but lasted just one offensive series before being replaced by newly acquired Sherard Ellis. Down 7-0, Ellis scored his first touchdown in a Venom uniform on a two-yard Quarterback keeper to even the score at 7-7 in the first quarter.
The two teams would trade touchdowns for most of the first half with the Venom pulling out in front by as many as eleven before heading into the locker room up by three with the score 24-21.
The Venom defense would step up in the second half coming away with multiple takeaways, while the offense would continue to roll under the command of Ellis. Venom kicker Jordy Finley was on the money as well going 3-3 on field goals. His most crucial field goal came with 2:51 to go in the game to put the Venom up 9 and more importantly two possessions.
The Brawlers would not go away though. Quarterback Nate Samas would run one in on a Quarterback keeper with 52 seconds remaining to set up the most exciting play in football, the onside kick. The Venom would recover the kick however and score a couple plays later on a touchdown run by DonTa Bright.
Trying to create a miracle, Samas would heave a desperation pass in the closing seconds that would be intercepted by Ricky McKinley and taking back the other direction as time expired, giving the Venom the 50-35 win.
The AMARILLO VENOM is a proud member of the Indoor Football League.
