Harrisburg Stampede Kick into Gear against Carolina Speed
HARRISBURG, PA (May 16, 2011) - Powered by 23 points from kicker J.R. Cipra, a renewed running game, three touchdowns from Quarterback Brian Harris and, perhaps most importantly, a sharp reduction in mental mistakes, the Harrisburg Stampede captured their second victory in the three weeks Saturday night by stalling the Carolina Speed 59-30.
Cipra was named player of the game with his 23 points off of five field goals (44, 15, 20, 20, 32), five extra points, and three unos. The Stampede faithful were also happy to see a season high performance from star running back Eugene Goodman who totaled 36 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries.
Brian Harris in his second start at quarterback for the Stampede was 16 of 30 passing for 184 yards and one touchdown and one interception. He also added two scores on the ground.
After a 0-6 start, the Stampede won their second game in three weeks by limiting three key categories: penalties, turnovers, and sacks against. After averaging over 11 penalties per game heading into their match-up against Carolina, the Stampede committed only four penalties against the Speed.
They also reduced turnovers from over three a game to two, and saw a dramatic drop in sacks from 4.5 a game to two.
Over midway through the second period it looked like it might be another tough battle for the Stampede as they held a slim 18-17 lead following a 20-yard field goal by Speed Kicker Bruce Reinecker at the 5:40 mark of the second quarter.
Just over two minutes later Goodman scored his second rushing TD of the game and as time expired on the first half Cipra hit his second field goal of the game to stake the Stampede to a 28-17 lead at the half.
Cipra picked up where he left off with a 20-yard field goal just 4:50 into the second half to increase the Stampede margin to 31-17. Cooter Arnold then scored on a 23-yard run to reduce the Stampede lead to 31-24, but then it was all Stampede the rest of the contest.
Brian Harris scored on the first of two one-yard rushing touchdowns then Cipra went on a kicking spree with a rouge and two more field goals. The last coming with 12:20 left in the game. After Harris completed his second one-yard scoring dash at the 2:18 mark Cipra added another uno and the Stampede posted a 52-24 lead.
With the Speed trying to reduce the final margin of victory, Arnold forced a pass which was batted by the Stampede defensive line and defensive back Jamaal Stokes returned the toss for a score providing Harrisburg with their final points of the night.
As time was about to expire Arnold found C.J. Washington on a five-yard pass with 25 seconds remaining to make the final margin of victory 59-30.
Harris finished the night 16 of 30 passing for 184 yards and one touchdown and one interception and two rushing touchdowns. Goodman had two rushing scores and 36 yards on 18 carries. Collis
Martin led all Stampede receivers with eight receptions for 87 yards and Terry Jackson pulled in six catches for 71 yards. LaRoi Johnson had the lone scoring reception.
Stokes led all Stampede defenders with six tackles, three passes broken up, and one interception. Derek Patterson had four tackles, Tay Wynn three, and Cory Groover and Fearon Wright led Harrisburg with one sack each.
The Stampede now travels to Trenton for a Friday night match-up at 7:00 PM against the Steel, who are reeling from a 90-79 shootout loss to the division leading Erie Explosion.
