The Cincinnati Commandos moved one step closer to a perfect regular season by defeating the Chicago Knights 48-41 in Loves Park, Illinois. Chicago was trying to avenge a 53-7 loss in the first game of the season for both teams at The Gardens in Cincinnati.
Cincinnati would get off to a fast start, scoring the first two touchdowns of the game. The first, a three yard touchdown run by Derrick Moss. Yingling would add the extra point to give the Commandos a 7-0 lead. George Murray would then throw a three yard touchdown pass to Phillip Barnett, the extra point had Cincinnati up 14-0 in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Chicago would get on the board to end the first quarter scoring on a 12 yard touchdown pass to Zontavivs Johnson from Brandon Jewett, the extra point was no good. The quarter would end with Cincinnati leading 14-6.
The Knights would close the gap halfway through the second quarter with a 19 yard touchdown pass from Jewett to Brandon Wogoman, the two point conversion attempt was no good, leaving the Knights down just two points.
Just two minutes later, the Commandos would answer the Chicago score with a 16 yard touchdown run by Derrick Moss, with the extra point, Cincinnati held a 21-12 lead.
As they would do to close the first quarter, Chicago would finish the scoring on a one yard touchdown run by Shawn McKeown. Julie Harshbarger would make the extra point and Cincinnati had a 21-19 lead at the half.
Chicago would take the lead in the third quarter with the only score being a eight yard touchdown pass to Willie Tolon. It was the third touchdown pass of the game for Jewett. Chicago led 25-21 after three.
The fourth quarter would prove to be one of the most exciting in the CIFL this season with four lead changes and seven scores.
Derrick Moss would score his third touchdown of the game on a one yard run to open the quarter scoring, the two point conversion was missed but Cincinnati had a 27-25 lead.
Chicago would add the next nine points on a 20 yard field goal by Julie Harshbarger and a 38 yard touchdown pass from Jewett to Wogoman. The two point conversion would fail but the Knights held a 34-27 lead.
Brandon Boehm scored on a 15 yard touchdown pass from Murray with just over three minutes to play, Yingling would tie the game with the extra point at 34.
Chicago would score for the final time with just under two minutes to play on a 27 yard touchdown pass from Jewett to Johnson. Harshbarger would up the lead to seven with the extra point giving the Knights a 41-34 lead.
Cincinnati was left with too much time as they would score with 31 seconds left on a 19 yard touchdown pass from Murray to Greg Moore. The extra point, however, would be missed, to set up the dramatic finish as Chicago held a one point lead, 41-40.
Yingling would kick, and recover an onside kick at the Cincinnati 10, giving the Commandos the ball and one last chance to continue the perfect season.
Following an incompletion, Murray completed a pass to Moss down to the Cincinnati 23 yard line with just 15 seconds remaining. Murray would then hook up with Nez Mincy for 12 yards, taking the ball to the Knights 15 with 11 seconds to play. The two would connect again on the game winner, a 15 yard touchdown pass with just five seconds on the clock. The Commandos would add a two point coversion and have a 48-41 lead.
Chicago would get one last chance but an incomplete pass as time expired would end the game.
Cincinnati is off this coming week, and Chicago plays at Dayton.
