Bethlehem, PA: The Steelhawks had played three games prior to Sunday afternoon against their rival the Reading Express, and each had gone down to the final minute of the game.
Unfortunately, the established Express franchise has had the Steelhawks number in their inaugural season. The first three contests the Steelhawks fell by seven, five, and three points respectively, however the home team could not muster much offense falling 51-14 and allowing the Express to clinch the Atlantic Division Championship.
In the opening possession, the Reading Express used a strong running attack to score the gaems first points. League MVP candidate Chris Malleo called his own number from the nine yard line and found the endzone to go up 7-0. The Steelhawks answered back quickly on their next possession as Running Back Isaiah Grier found a wide open hole up the middle for a 30 yard scoring scamper. Reading then answered back with a Erik Rockhold field goal and a touchdown by backup Quarterback Bill Winters on a fake field goal to go up 17-7.
The Steelhawks once again attempted to mount a comeback as AJ Roque found Dom Stewart for a three yard scoring strike to narrow the score at 17-14. After another Rockhold field Steelhawks return man Theo Hall brought the kickoff back to the Express one yard line with a chance to go ahead, but the offense could not score on four consecutive run plays and would not be able to rebound from there. Reading would then go on to score 31 unanswered points to hand the Steelhawks their seventh consecutive loss.
"We just can't seem to find an answer for these guys," stated Head Coach Rich Britt. "They beat us in all phases of the game, and it's unacceptable. As a team, we've played poorly and with a lack of effort and heart for the last couple weeks. We need to look deep inside ourselves and find that fire to play football and end this season with some positives."
The Steelhawks now travel to Richmond this Saturday as they take on the Richmond Revolution at the site of the team's only win on the year. Fans wishing to view the game can log onto www.b2tv.com and watch online.
The team return home Saturday, May 21st for a contest against the Fairbanks, Alaska Grizzlies at 7 p.m. The game, deemed Race For Adam Night, will serve as a fundraiser for the Race for Adam. The Race for Adam Foundation, a volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to funding research projects to find a treatment and cure for Niemann-Pick Type C disease (NP-C) and related neurodegenerative disorders, began in 2005. In July of that year, Sean and Amy Recke's seven-year old son, Adam, was diagnosed with NP-C, a genetic neurodegenerative disorder for which there is no cure. Due to the family's kindness and respect for everyone, the community came together to help them; they are a family who has shown great patience, strength and hope in this time of urgency. Adam has touched the lives of everyone he has met, and continues to embrace life with a perfect smile. With the support of the community, a seed of hope has grown and continues to branch through events that will promote awareness and funding for research into NP-C and related neuro-degenerative disorders. The Foundation is named in honor of Adam Recke.
