The Green Bay Blizzard returned home Saturday to the Resch Center following a heartbreaking last-second loss to division rival Chicago last weekend.
The Blizzard were looking to rebound and move into first place atop the Great Lakes Division as they faced their in-state rival, the La Crosse Spartans in an indoor football league matchup.
Green Bay got back to its winning ways, which it enjoyed over the course of a six-game winning streak, and defeated the Spartans 44-21 in front of 3,475 fans.
The Blizzard offense got off to a fast start, scoring a touchdown on its opening series when quarterback Willie Copeland connected with wide receiver Agim Shabaj for a 7-yard touchdown pass. On the play, Shabaj broke several tackles and bounced his way into the end zone.
Shortly after, Blizzard defensive lineman Jeremiah Price recovered a La Crosse fumble by running back LaRon Council. The fumble recovery led to a 22-yard field goal by Blizzard place-kicker Joshua Shene with 13:25 remaining in the second quarter to extend the lead to 10-0.
Green Bay added a 4-yard touchdown run by DeMaudray Woolridge and the Blizzard defense shut out the Spartan offense to take a 17-0 lead into halftime.
La Crosse opened the second half with a touchdown by quarterback Buddy Rivera, who scored on 6-yard keeper. Following the touchdown, Spartan place-kicker Mike Polaski added a 31-yard field goal to cut the defecit to 17-9 with 4:44 remaining in the third quarter.
The Blizzard responded with a 7-yard touchdown when Copeland found a leaping Chris Bell in the middle of the end zone to close out the third quarter.
After a Spartan touchdown, Blizzard defensive back B.J. Hill returned the following kickoff 58 yards for a touchdown, eluding tacklers and bouncing into the end zone for a 30-15 lead.
Copeland added a pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to wide receivers Bryan Pray and Agim Shabaj to close the scoring and seal the Blizzard victory.
For the game, Copeland completed 13 of 21 passes for 105 yards and four touchdowns. Shabaj caught three passes, two of which were touchdowns and Woolridge rushed for 45 yards with one touchdown.
Defensively, defensive back Greg Jackson collected 14 tackles, breaking his own single-game Blizzard record of 13 from earlier this season.
Next Sunday, the Blizzard travel to South Dakota to face the Sioux Falls Storm. Game time is 2:05 p.m.
