STOCKTON - This was not the typical arena league contest, which sometimes resembles a track meet as much as a football game.
The Wolves had their usual array of big offensive plays, but they dominated the Reno Barons with a hard-hitting and opportunistic defensive performance.
Stockton forced eight turnovers and opened the scoring with a safety as it trounced the Barons 76-30 on Friday in front of a crowd of 1,034 at Stockton Arena. The Wolves improved to 4-0, and beat the Barons (1-2) for the second time in as many games.
"Our defensive line played great, and we really did a great job of rushing the passer and forcing mistakes," Wolves coach Bennie King said. "The defense allowed us to recuperate when we made some bad mistakes early when we had the ball."
Reno came to Stockton hoping to avenge a 57-19 home loss on April 23. The Barons started out pretty well when Wolves quarterback Chad Elliott was intercepted for the first time this season and D'Angelo Milbert-Wilson returned it 50 yards for a touchdown and a 6-2 Reno lead 2:09 into the game.
That was the last time the Barons would lead, although they were within 22-18 in the second quarter before the Wolves started taking away the ball and piling up points.
"Turnovers kill momentum," Reno coach Anthony Bartley said. "And at this level, in arena football, it can hurt you more because everything is so fast paced."
Elliott led a touchdown drive to put Stockton up by 12 points, and Reno quarterback De Joeve Platt was intercepted by Kevin Brown on the next possession, leading to Elliott's 7-yard touchdown pass to Mike Hill.
Rakine Toomes recovered a fumble the next time Reno had the ball, settup up Elliott's lofted 19-yard touchdown pass to Jasonus Tillery to give Stockton a 42-18 edge with 11.3 seconds left in the first half.
Platt gave up his fourth interception of the half, but the Wolves didn't have any time to turn that miscue into points.
Elliott completed 12 of 18 passes for 146 yards and six touchdowns, two each to Tillery and Lincoln High graduate Dominique Howard.
