Game Preview - Blizzard Battle in State Rival La Crosse
Who: La Crosse (4-5) vs. Green Bay Blizzard (6-2)
When: Saturday, May 7th 7:30 p.m.
Where: Resch Center -- Green Bay, WI
Blizzard Update: After winning six games in a row, the Blizzard dropped a heartbreaker last week 42-39 to division rival Chicago Slaughter. The teams went back and forth for most of the game. The Blizzard moved the ball downfield and appeared to put themselves in position to win the game in the final minutes, but turned the ball over on downs to the Slaughter when quarterback Willie Copeland's pass sailed out of the back of the end zone on fourth down. Chicago ran a few plays and positioned themselves to attempt a field goal. With 0:04 remaining, Slaughter kicker Chris Nendick was able to connect on the game-winning 41-yard field goal. Despite the loss, the Blizzard received an outstanding performance from wide receiver Robert Garth. He caught 11 passes for 90 yards and scored three touchdowns. Linebacker Greg Jackson tied his single game record for tackles with 13. Defensive back Josh Jones had 12 tackles.
Spartans Update: After losing three games in a row, La Crosse received a much needed win last week with a shutout of the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks 51-0. It was a game of big plays for the Spartans; Kevis Buckley returned a missed field goal 57 yards for a touchdown, quarterback Buddy Rivera hit Emmanuel Spann for a 45-yard touchdown on the Spartans first play from scrimmage, later he hit Aaron Rhea for a one-handed grab and a 48-yard score, Bernard Faithful blocked a field goal, and teammate Walner Belleus returned it 39 yards for a score. LaRon Council rushed for three touchdowns. The Spartans had five sacks, and four players had interceptions.
Series: Green Bay leads the series 2-0. La Crosse joined the IFL as an expansion team for the 2010 season.
Notes: The Blizzard ranks fourth in the IFL with an average of 52.3 points per game, while the Spartans average 38.9. Green Bay also has an advantage on the defensive side of the ball giving up 35.6 points per game versus 46.2 for La Crosse. Blizzard defensive back Arkeith Brown is tied for the IFL lead with eight interceptions. Spartans defensive lineman Xzavie Jackson is third in the IFL with 7.5 sacks and Blizzard defensive lineman James McClinton is not far behind with 7 sacks. The La Crosse offense likes to run the ball. The Spartans lead the IFL in rush attempts with 257 compared with 99 attempts for the Blizzard. LaRon Council leads the Spartans with 405 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns.
