Cincinnati 41 - Dayton 7
The Cincinnati Commandos kept their perfect season in tact with a 41-7 victory over backyard rival Dayton at Cincinnati’s Garden Center. The win improves Cincinnati’s record to 7-0 and keeps them in first place, while Dayton dropped to 3-5.
Unlike their first meeting earlier this month, when Dayton led Cincinnati at home early in the fourth quarter, Cincinnati jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.
Midway through the first quarter, the Commandos scored on five yard run by quarterback Tyler Sheehan to put Cincinnati ahead 7-0. Cincinnati added a second score in the quarter when Marcus Spencer intercepted Dayton’s Jarvis Taylor’s pass and returned it 51 yards for a score and 14-0 lead after one stanza. In second period, Dayton scored its only points of the game when Daniel Stover caught a six yard pass from Taylor. The PAT was good and it was 14-7. Late in the second quarter, Sheehan ran in from a yard out and the halftime score was 21-7 in favor of the Commandos.
Midway through the third period, Cincinnati scored the only touchdown when Greg Moore ran in from six yards out and after three, Cincinnati held a commanding 28-7 lead. In the final period, the Commandos added two touchdowns on a Derrick Moss 1 yard and a 30 yard pass from Sheehan to Phillip Barnett.
For the game, Cincinnati was led by quarterback Sheehan who completed 10 of 21 passes for 113 yards and one touchdown and three interceptions. Sheehan also ran for 26 yards on five carriers and two touchdowns. Running back Greg Moore led the team with 42 yards on seven attempts. The top receiver was Barnett who had two receptions for 50 yards. The top defender was Wendell Brown who had four unassisted tackles and six assisted tackles.
The Silverbacks were led on offense by quarterback Taylor who had 40 yards passing, one touchdown on six of 19 completed passes. His top receiver was Stover who had three receptions for 28 yards. The top rusher was Ronald Russell who had 13 yards in seven attempts. The top defender was Johnny Wright, who had four assisted and four unassisted tackles.
The Silverbacks return home next week to face Indianapolis at Hara Arena. Meanwhile, Cincinnati will travel to Loves Park, Illinois to play the Chicago Knights.
Marion 31 - Chicago 3
The Marion Blue Racers used a solid defensive performance to shut down the visiting Chicago Knights, 31-3. Marion improves to 6-1 while the Knights fall to 4-3.
Chicago started the scoring with a 28 yard field goal by Julie Harshbarger. It would be the only lead and the only points for the Knights all night.
Marion would not get onto the scoreboard until the second quarter when CIFL MVP candidate Mike Tatum caught his first of two touchdown passes from Josh Harris, this a six yard reception. Tyler Lorenz would add the extra point and the Blue Racers had a 7-3 lead. Marion would add a safety as the first half clock expired and took a 9-3 lead into the half.
The second half started like the first half ended with a Marion safety to go up 11-3. Tatum would catch another six yard touchdown pass from Harris and the Lorez extra point had the Blue Racers up 18-3.
Mark Huddleston would score on a five yard touchdown run and Christan Haywood would add a two yard run to cap the scoring and the 31-3 Marion victory.
Harris completed just eight passes for 67 yards and two touchdowns and three interceptions. Haywood carried the ball six times for 44 yards and a score, he was also the leading receiver with 20 yards. Mike Tatum had to receptions, both for touchdowns of six yards. On defense, Marion was lead by Bryceson Lawrence with eight tackles.
Jewitt completed 13 passes for 82 yards in the loss, throwing for no touchdowns or interceptions. Wogoman led the team in rushing yards with seven and 43 receiving yards. Leading the way for Chicago on defense was James Cichon with 11 tackles and an interception.
Marion has the week off and Chicago will host Cincinnati next weekend.
