The Green Bay Blizzard were back on the road again for the second consecutive week Friday night as they faced their division rival the Chicago Slaughter in Hoffman Estates, Ill.
Green Bay (6-2) was coming off an impressive 60-6 win last week in Washington against the Wenatchee Valley Venom and was looking to push their winning streak to seven games.
Hoping to build on last week's dominating performance, Green Bay came up short and were defeated by the Slaughter 42-39 in a close game in front of 3,727 fans at the Sears Centre.
Following an early touchdown by Chicago on their first offensive series, Green Bay evened the score at 7-7 when quarterback Jameel Sewell connected with recently acquired wide receiver Robert Garth, who broke several tackles on his way into the end zone, for a 14-yard touchdown pass.
Over the next two offensive series, the Blizzard and Slaughter exchanged field goals. Blizzard place-kicker Joshua Shene connected on a 21-yard field goal, while Slaughter place-kicker Chris Nendick made a 17-yard field goal. The score remained tied at 10-10 with 0:18 remaining in the first quarter.
After Chicago responded with a touchdown, Blizzard quarterback Wille Copeland found a wide-open Garth along the right side of the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown pass with 10:12 remaining in the second quarter. The score was tied at 17-17.
Green Bay added a safety and a 35-yard field goal by Shene to take a 22-20 lead into halftime.
Chicago opened the third quarter with a touchdown when quarterback Ben Sankey found James Robinson for a 15-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was no good, but the score helped the Slaughter regain the lead at 26-22.
Following the touchdown, Blizzard running back DeMaudray Woolridge helped Green Bay regain the lead, 29-26, when he scored on a 15-yard run.
Both teams again exchanged field goals over the next three offensive series. Shene connected on a 37-yard field goal, while Nendick made field goals of 32 and 41 yards. The score was tied 32-32 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Blizzard struck first when Sewell found Garth for a 7-yard touchdown pass. The touchdown put the Blizzard ahead 39-32 and was Garth's third on the night.
With 2:33 remaining in the game and the Blizzard clinging to a 7-point lead, Slaughter running back Kevin Grady took the handoff from Sankey for a touchdown and tied the game at 39-39.
The Blizzard moved the ball downfield and appeared to put themselves in position to win the game in the final minutes, but turned the ball over on downs to the Slaughter when Copeland's pass sailed out of the back of the end zone on fourth down.
Chicago ran a few plays and positioned themselves in place to attempt a field goal. With 0:04 remaining Nendick was able to connect on the game-winning 41-yard field goal.
Despite the loss, the Blizzard received an outstanding performance from Garth, who caught 11 passes for 90 yards and scored three touchdowns. Sewell completed 7 of 19 passes for 61 yards and scored two touchdowns. Linebacker Greg Jackson had 13 tackles to lead the defense.
Next week, the Blizzard return home to face the La Crosse Spartans on Saturday, May 7. Game time is 7:30 p.m. It will be Military Appreciation Night. Taco Bell & WFRV-TV5 will be giving away FREE youth camo hats to the first 1,500 kids 14 & under.
