(RICHMOND)- The Albany Panthers don't pretend to be fancy. They have a 6-0 record and a game lead in their division over the defending league champions. Albany plays great defense; they are 2nd in the SIFL in fewest points allowed. They have specialized in smothering good teams in front of big home crowds that average over 5,000 per game. They have averaged yielding 26 points per game at home.
That is not to say that you can discount the Albany offense. While scoring over 50 points only once this season they have controlled the football and have avoided turnovers and sacks. Albany is led by QB Cecil Lester who has completed 57% of his passes while throwing for 23 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions.
This game could be decided by the success of the Richmond offense. Mike Potts became the fourth QB to start a game for the Raiders this season last week in Erie. Richmond has scored 50 points or more in all but one of their games, but Potts & Co. will have to have their timing down well to move the ball against the stingy Albany defense. If it turns into a defensive struggle Richmond will have to rely on its league leading pass rush (27 sacks) to create field position and turnover opportunities. Albany counters with an offensive line that has yielded only 4 sacks all season.
The Richmond Raiders continue their 2011 home schedule May 7 against the Erie Explosion at 7 pm. It will be Local Attraction Night presented by Colonial Downs. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Raider Ticket Hotline at 804-780-0430 or at ticketmaster.com.
