Veteran DB Smith Named Stampede Defensive Coordinator
HARRISBURG, PA (April 27, 2011) - The Harrisburg Stampede continued an overhaul of their coaching staff following an 0-6 start; today naming Archie Smith, a fan favorite as a player, as the team's Defensive Coordinator.
"I have known Archie for seven years; back to when he played for me in Montgomery. With his strong knowledge of the game, especially defensively, and the injuries he has suffered the last two seasons, it is a good time for him to make the transition from player to coach. His enthusiasm and love of the game will spark the defense and get the Stampede back on track," stated Stampede Co-owner and founder John Morris.
Smith will bring a wide breadth of defensive knowledge from his seven seasons as a pro. In a professional career, which started with the Montgomery Maulers of the National Indoor Football League (NIFL) in 2005, Smith has totaled over 250 career tackles and 47 interceptions.
After playing for Montgomery from 2005 through 2007, Smith played for the Baltimore Mariners in 2008 and is now in his third season with the Stampede.
A native of Alabama, he played prep ball at Russell County High School and collegiately at Alabama State.
Smith takes over a Stampede defense which ranks at or near the bottom in scoring defense, total defense, and passing defense. The unit has also only generated seven turnovers and eight sacks this season.
"I am very excited about the opportunity. I think I bring a lot to the team as a former teammate and also with my football knowledge. I am also looking forward to the challenge of facing off against Erie this weekend. I have never been part of a defense that was ranked last in the league. I want to rebuild our attitude and rebuild our name as one of the top defenses in the league," commented Smith.
Smith will lead the Harrisburg defense when they take on the Erie Explosion this Saturday, April 30th at 7:30 PM at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex Equine Arena. Arena seating is only $15, Box seats $20, and tickets are available for groups of ten or more for just $10.
