Blizzard Defeat Venom to Extend Winning Streak to Six Games
The Blizzard were back on the road Friday night for the first time in four weeks as they traveled to Wenatchee, Wash., to face the Wenatchee Valley Venom in a cross-conference Indoor Football League matchup.
Green Bay was looking to extend their winning streak to six games and was able to do just that, defeating the Venom 60-6. The win helped Green Bay remain one-half game behind Bloomington in the Great Lakes Division for first place and improved their road record to 3-1 on the season.
The Blizzard (6-1) continued their winning ways with strong play on both sides of the football, putting together an all-around team performance.
The Blizzard offense got on the scoreboard early when quarterback Jameel Sewell, who got the nod over last week's starter Wille Copeland, found wide receiver Chris Bell streaking down the field wide open for a 44-yard touchdown pass on fourth down from its own 6-yard line.
Following a missed field goal by the Venom, Sewell found wide receiver Lonnie Sanders wide open in the right corner of the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 3:54 remaining in the first quarter to increase the Blizzard lead to 13-0.
A Blizzard interception by defensive back Josh Jones set up a 34-yard field goal by place-kicker Rubio Radamez with 7:29 remaining in the second quarter to push the lead to 16-0.
B.J. Hill added a 10-yard touchdown run for the Blizzard to increase the lead to 22-0 when he took a handoff from Sewell straight up the middle, breaking a few tackles on his way into the end zone.
The Blizzard received a pair of touchdowns from Sewell over the next two offensive series to go a long with a pair of safeties to push the lead to 39-0 at the half. The first touchdown came with 1:01 remaining the in second quarter when Sewell scored on a 3-yard quarterback keeper. The second was made with 0:13 remaining when Sewell passed to Sanders for an 8-yard touchdown pass.
The Blizzard were able to build on their big lead, scoring three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to close out the contest. Sewell collected all three scores, one by rush and the other two by pass.
Sewell led the Blizzard attack, completing 27 of 45 passes for 299 yards and five touchdowns for the game. Also, Sewell rushed for two touchdowns.
Blizzard wide receiver Chris Bell caught nine passes for 118 yards and scored two touchdowns, while wide receiver Lonnie Sanders caught nine passes for 76 yards and scored three touchdowns.
The Green Bay defense was solid on the afternoon, holding the Venom to six points and forcing five turnovers. Blizzard defensive backs Arkeith Brown, Josh Jones and B.J. Hill collected an interception, while linebacker Aaron Bryant added another.
Defensive linemen James McClinton and Jeremiah Price provided pressure on Venom quarterback Charles Dowdell for much of the night. McClinton collected 3.5 tackles-for-loss and Price made 2.5.
Next week, the Blizzard travel to Chicago to face the Slaughter. Game time is 7:35 p.m.
