The East Texas Wranglers football team was impressive in its debut on Saturday. All 30 minutes of it.
The Wranglers rolled over the North Texas Broncos 44-0 in the franchise’s first game before approximately 150 spectators at the Longview Rodeo Arena. The game ended at halftime as the Broncos picked up their equipment and departed. The Broncos had 11 players in uniform, barely half the maximum number of 21 the Independent Indoor Football Alliance (IIFA) allows for each team’s roster. The Wranglers had the maximum allotment of players allowed.
“They said, ‘We’re leaving,’” Wranglers head coach Corey Mayfield said. “This is against league rules. The fans paid for a full game.”
Running back Cliff Edwards scored the first points in the history of the Wranglers on a three-yard touchdown run with 11:30 left in the first quarter. The Wranglers (1-0) needed just one offensive play for the touchdown after its defense held the Broncos (0-1) to a four-plays-and-out possession. IIFA games play with rules similar to the Arena Football League, playing on 50-yard fields with no punting allowed.
As indicated by a rare shutout, defense ruled the day for the Wranglers as they picked off six passes, three by Tramaine Wright. The first interception was by Cody Welch, who had an 11-yard return to set up a 19-yard touchdown pass from Terrance Parks to Tony Burnett with 7:12 left in the first quarter, expanding the Wranglers’ lead to 14-0.
The Wranglers returned two interceptions for touchdowns, with Marquis Price going for 10 yards with 3:03 left in the first quarter and Wright scoring from 20 yards with 10:30 left in the second quarter. Dontay Richardson, a former Longview Lobo, also had an interception off Bronco quarterback Byron Bayne, who threw five interceptions.
Wright said the team was challenged after dropping a 75-66 decision to the North Texas Crunch, the three-time defending IIFA champions, in an exhibition last week.
“Coach (Mayfield) put a chip on our shoulders. After what happened last week, we were not going to allow any touchdowns,” Wright said. “It’s go hard or go home.
“I guess they wanted to go home.”
Mayfield said while he was disappointed with his team making two turnovers, he was pleased with improvement on maintaining possession after giving up six interceptions against the Crunch. Parks was 5-for-9 for 46 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Both of DaMarcus Jenkins’ catches were for touchdowns, going for 7 and 5 yards.
Wrangler kicker Daniel Young was 3-for-4 extra-point attempts, kicking into a goal just nine feet wide. Young also scored the Wranglers kickoff point, kicking it through the uprights for one point with 10:41 left in the second quarter to extend the lead to 30-0.
The start of the game was delayed one hour because of an automobile accident involving officials which brought the down indicator and chain set.
The Wranglers also had trouble with one section of its inflatable sideline wall as two air blowers broke down, one of which shooting out flames although nobody was in danger of getting hurt. Two smaller sized tubes were used in place of one regulation-sized wall. The game was played with dimensions and rules similar to the Arena Football League, but no netframes were used.
The Wranglers host the Dallas Americans at 5 p.m. next Sunday at Longview Rodeo Arena.
