Richmond, VA: Week 8 for the Indoor Football League was full of strong competitions where League Leaders showed their muscles and started pulling away from the rest of the competition.
The Indoor Football League began Week 8 with the Arizona Adrenaline stopping by the Fairbanks Grizzlies hoping to get their first win of the season. However, from the start, the Fairbanks Grizzlies dominated the game. By the close of the first half the Grizzlies scored 57 points compared to the 6 points for the Adrenaline. Throughout the game, the Adrenaline was plagued with mistakes with 7 fumbles, 4 sacks, and 3 interceptions. The Adrenaline was not the only one with major mistakes in the game; the Grizzlies had the ball intercepted twice and lost a fumbled ball. However, the Grizzlies were able to overcome their mistakes and put up big numbers: 302 total yards, 13 touchdowns, and 4 sacks, which helped the Fairbanks Grizzlies defeat the Arizona Adrenaline, 92-32.
The second battle was between the Bricktown Brawlers and the Wyoming Cavalry. In the first quarter of the game, the two teams were nearly matched up, Brawlers scoring 6 points, and the Cavalry scoring 7. However, the second quarter proved to be a standout quarter for the Cavalry. Wyoming scored 13 points in the second quarter, while holding the Brawlers scoreless. After having an uneventful second quarter the Brawlers were not able to recover. In the third quarter, the Cavalry scored 15 points, and the Brawlers could only muster 7 points. Though the Brawlers fought hard, they were not able to overcome the deficit the Cavalry created for them. The Cavalry were able to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them, where the Brawlers struggled; there was only an 8 yard difference in total offense; however, the Cavalry produced 8 touchdowns rather than the 4 touchdowns for the Brawlers. The closing score for the second game was 63-25, Wyoming Cavalry.
The West Texas Roughnecks visited the Allen Wranglers on Friday evening. These two teams are at the top of the Lonestar Division of the Intense Conference looking to show who the stronger team is. By half-time, there was only a 2-point difference with the Allen Wranglers on top. By the beginning of the third quarter, both teams knew that in order to win they must play hard with mistakes few and far apart. The Roughnecks outscored the Wranglers 14-7 in the third quarter, and were beating the Wranglers by 5 points. The Roughnecks were able to post up 160 offensive yards and 4 touchdowns, while the Wranglers only had 103 offensive yards and 3 touchdowns. By the beginning of the fourth quarter, it appeared that the Roughnecks were going to defeat the Wranglers, but the Wranglers scored 8 more points than the Roughnecks in the fourth quarter. Though the majority of the numbers for the Wranglers were lower, the competitive advantage came from the toe of the Allen Wranglers' kicker, Garrett Courtney, who helped his team defeat the West Texas Roughnecks, 31-28.
Friday evening the Bloomington Extreme went to the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks looking to earn another win for the franchise. The two teams were pretty evenly matched throughout the game, with a 1 yard difference in rushing yards, and a 53 yard difference in total offensive yardage. Not only was productivity matched, but errors as well, with both teams having two fumbles, only losing one of them. In all but 1 quarter the greatest point differential was 4 points. However, one team was able to pull away in the second quarter. The Bloomington Extreme was able to post up 17 points compared to the Steelhawks 7 points, which gave Bloomington the advantage for the remainder of the game, with a closing score of 30-16, Bloomington Extreme.
The Richmond Revolution hosted the Reading Express Saturday with the mindset of taking down the top seed in their division, Atlantic Division of the United Conference. The greatest difference in score was in the first quarter where the Reading Express outscored the Richmond Revolution 6-0. By halftime there was a 9 point difference with the Reading Express ahead. Though the Revolution was able to stay in the game, they were not able to overcome the Express's offense. Richmond was only able to get 1 touchdown the entire game; however, Reading had 4 touchdowns. If the Revolution would have been able to get their running game started, they would have had a better opportunity to remain competitive in the game, but the Express's running game was moving with 2 touchdowns and 98 yards. The Reading Express was able to maintain their dominance in the Atlantic Division, beating the Richmond Revolution, 25-15.
Saturday evening the La Crosse Spartans visited the Chicago Slaughter looking for another win. The first quarter started out slow for the two teams; the Slaughter scored 7 points and the Spartans were able to score 6 points. The second quarter was all about the Slaughter who scored 14 points, and only allowed 3 points for the Spartans, and taking the lead into halftime. The Chicago Slaughter was able to take advantage of opportunities presented by the Spartans, such as the Slaughter gained 20 yards from the 3 interceptions, and the Slaughter defense was able to sack the Spartan QB twice. The Spartans had very bright moments, such as the 163 rushing yards, 3 rushing touchdowns, and outscoring the Slaughter by 3 points in the fourth quarter; however, it was not enough to overcome the dominance of the Chicago Slaughter in the end, 54-40 Chicago Slaughter.
The Omaha Beef hosted the Wichita Wild on Saturday evening. From the beginning of the game, both of the teams were evenly matched up, the greatest deficit was in the second quarter when the Omaha Beef outscored the Wichita Wild 13-0 in that quarter. There was only a 3-yard difference in the rushing yards, and both teams had 4 touchdowns; however, the total yards of offense for the Omaha Beef was 235 versus the 187 yards for the Wild. The Wild played a very good game; however, they were not able to overcome the major deficit set in the second quarter. The foot of C.J. Gradoville, kicker for the Omaha Beef, earned the team 12 points, which helped the team defeat the Wichita Wild, 36-24.
One of the most intriguing match-ups for Week 8 was between the undefeated Colorado Ice and the Amarillo Venom. The Colorado Ice is the top team of the Mountain West Division and the Amarillo Venom is rounding out the Lonestar Division; most would have assumed that this game was a sure-win for the Ice. However, in every quarter the greatest point difference was 3 points, they both scored 3 touchdowns, and the total offensive yardage difference was 9 yards for the Ice. At the beginning of the fourth quarter both teams were tied at 10. The Ice scored a touchdown and a field goal with 2 minutes in the game, and the Venom only had a touchdown. With 50 seconds left in the game, the Venom made another touchdown bringing the score to 24-20, Amarillo. However, with just 18 seconds left in the game Knighton passes 13 yards to Witter for an Ice touchdown, which closed out the game with the Colorado Ice remaining undefeated.
The final Saturday evening game was between the Nebraska Danger and the Wenatchee Valley Venom. The game started out with some flair with a Greg Erickson rogue, giving the Wenatchee Valley Venom an edge in the first quarter. After the introductory flop from the Danger, they came back with full force outscoring the Venom in every quarter after the first. Though the Danger only had 21 more yards of offense than the Venom, they were more productive yards because they were able to score 12 touchdowns versus the 9 touchdowns for the Venom. The Wenatchee Valley Venom fought hard and did not allow the Danger to outscore them more than 8 points in every quarter; however, it was not enough to defeat the Danger, who won with a score of 84-63.
The final game for Week 8 occurred on Sunday when the Kent Predators visited the Tri-Cities Fever. The Fever started out strong outscoring the Predators in the first three quarters of the game, with a score of 54-21, Fever, going into the fourth quarter. The Fever defense stayed very active with 4 sacks, which stunted the productivity of the Predator offense. However, in the fourth quarter the Predators rallied together to earn 21 points in that single quarter for the team, but these final efforts were not enough to defeat the Tri-Cities Fever, who won Sunday afternoon's game, 60-42.
