Cincinnati vs. Port Huron
The Cincinnati Commandos improved to 5-0 this season with a 47-22 victory over Port Huron. The Predators have dropped two consecutive games and fall to 2-3 overall, three games behind frontrunner Cincinnati at the midpoint of the season.
Cincinnati and Port Huron played an even first quarter. The Commandos scored with 1:58 left in the first quarter on a 10 yard pass from George Murray to Phillip Barnett. Cincinnati increased its lead when Derrick Moss ran in from 14 yards out. With five minutes left in the first half, Ruben Gay ran in from a yard out and Cincinnati led 13-6. The Commandos put two more touchdowns on the board in the last two minutes of the half to lead 26-6.
Cincinnati scored first in the second half when Moss ran in from 30 yards out. Port Huron did score a touchdown with five minutes left in the quarter when Gay ran in from 11 yards out. The third quarter ended with Cincinnati leading 33-14. Port Huron scored first in the fourth quarter on a 42 yard run by Gay to cut the lead to 33-22. Cincinnati added two touchdowns in the final six minutes to win 47-22.
The defending league champion Commandos were led by quarterback Murray, who completed eight of 16 passes for 96 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. The top receiver was Charles Hawkins, who caught one pass for 38 yards and one touchdown. The top rusher was Moss with 91 yards on 10 attempts for three touchdowns. His long was 30 yards. The Commandos top defender was Thomas Glaggett who had five unassisted tackles and two assisted tackles and one unassisted sack.
The Predators were led by quarterback Mike Akrawi who completed six of 16 passes for 49 yards and through two interceptions. Davon Daniels was the top receiver, who caught three passes for 34 yards. Port Huron’s top rusher was Gay who had 96 yards on 12 carriers and three touchdowns. Their top defender was Ernie Smith with five unassisted tackles and two unassisted sacks.
Next week, Cincinnati travels to Chicago to face the Knights and Port Huron returns home to play Marion.
Marion vs. Dayton
Marion reached the half way mark of the season with an impressive road win defeating interstate rival Dayton 31-14 at Dayton’s Hare Arena. The win moves the Blue Racers to 4-1 overall, a game behind first place Cincinnati. The loss drops the Silverbacks to 1-4 on the season and four games out of first place.
Dayton scored nine seconds into the game when Fred Cromartie returned the opening kickoff 54 yards for the score and it was 7-0 early. The Blue Racers settled down and got a safety midway through the quarter and the Silverbacks led 7-2. Marion closed out the first quarter scoring when Christen Haywood ran in from two yards out and Marion led 9-7 after one period. The lone score in the second stanza belonged to the visitors when Josh Harris threw a 14 yard pass to Brandon Williams with five seconds left. It was 15-7 at half.
Marion opened the third quarter with a touchdown when Chris Stanford ran in from a yard out and it was 22-7. Dayton answered with a drive to start the second half when Stanford ran in from a yard out to close the gap to 22-14. Marion answered that score with a field goal to close the third quarter with a 25-14 lead. The Blue Racers tacked on one last score in the final period to win 31-14.
Marion’s offense was led by Harris, who was 13 of 21 for 107 yards and two touchdowns. His top receiver was Williams, who have receptions for 77 yards and caught both touchdowns. Harris led the team in rushing with 47 yards on nine attempts a scored a touchdown. Their top defensive player was L. best who had three assisted and three unassisted tackles. He also had one unassisted sack.
Dayton’s offensive attack was led by Stanford, who was four of 17 for 43 yards and one interception. His top target was Victor Tolbert, who caught one pass for 24 yards. The Silverbacks top rusher was Stanford with six carriers for 37 yards. Their top defensive player was James Spikes with five unassisted tackles, four assisted tackles and one unassisted sack.
Marion travels to Port Huron next week. Meanwhile, Dayton has a bye week.
Chicago vs. Indianapolis
Indianapolis hosted Chicago in a late scheduling change, the Knights won 42-14. Recap will be available Sunday evening.
