Richmond, VA: Week 7 for the Indoor Football League was full of close encounters. Many well-matched teams met up this past week battling to the very end in hopes of becoming the victors and another step closer to the championship.
The Indoor Football League began Week 7 with the Fairbanks Grizzlies stopping by the Kent Predators to battle it out for the win. Both teams played a very strong game; the Grizzlies had a total of 211 offensive yards and 4 touchdowns, while the Predators had 206 offensive yards with 4 touchdowns. The one fumble committed by the Grizzlies and recovered by the Predators was not a game-breaker because the Grizzlies' defense showed up and did not allow any gain from the recovery. In the third quarter, the Predators outscored the Grizzlies 30-24; however, the Grizzlies were able to hold the Predators scoreless in the fourth quarter, while getting an additional touchdown, making the closing score 31-30, the Fairbanks Grizzlies.
The second close encounter came between the Chicago Slaughter and the Bloomington Extreme at Bloomington. Chicago quickly took the lead at the close of the first quarter scoring 19 points compared to the 12 points of the Bloomington Extreme; however, in the second quarter the Extreme was able to hold the Slaughter to 28 points while scoring an additional 13 points for a total of 25 points by halftime. Both teams knew that a 3 point difference would not guarantee a win coming out of halftime and played harder than before. Though the Slaughter had nearly 100 more offensive yards and almost double kickoff return yards, the Extreme was able to get advantage in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Slaughter 52-44.
The Richmond Revolution stopped by the Green Bay Blizzard in hopes of getting their second win of the season. With goal in sight, the Revolution took an easy lead in the first quarter, 20-14. Though still showing productivity in the second quarter, the Revolution was held to 33 points while the Blizzard tacked on 26 more points giving them a total of 40 points by halftime. The Revolution came out strong after halftime closing the 7 point gap to just a 5 point difference. However, in the fourth quarter, the Blizzard dominated, scoring 15 points in the fourth quarter alone while holding the Revolution scoreless, which ended the game at 67-47.
Friday evening the Wichita Wild, who is looking to get the first 'W' of the season, hosted the West Texas Roughnecks. The Wild started out strong outscoring the Roughnecks, 13-7; however, the Roughnecks came back strong in the second quarter, stunting the Wild's progress of pulling away with the lead with a score of 27-26, Wild. At the start of the second half, the Wild maintained their lead in the third quarter; however, by the fourth quarter, it appeared the Roughnecks wear the Wild out. The Roughnecks prevented the Wild from scoring more than 8 points in the fourth quarter, while the Roughnecks scored 22 points of their own, which led to their victory on Friday evening, 54-47.
The Arizona Adrenaline visited the Wyoming Cavalry in hopes of earning their first win of the 2011 season; however, the Cavalry were looking to maintain their 3-game winning streak. Wyoming started off strong, not allowing the Adrenaline to score until about 13 minutes into the game, while they scored two touchdowns already. By the close of the second quarter the score was at 18-56, Wyoming. Though the Adrenaline put up a strong effort with a total of 290 offensive yards, and 5 touchdowns, they were not able to overcome Wyoming's strong defensive attack, which allowed the Wyoming offense to stay on the field and get 10 touchdowns. The Wyoming Cavalry's power overcame the Adrenaline with a final score of 70-31.
The sixth game of week 7 was a very high scoring game for both teams, the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks and the Reading Express. In each of the four quarters, both teams had double-digit scores. By halftime the score was tied at 34. The two teams put up 8 touchdowns by the close of the game, and there was only a 50-yard difference in total offensive yardage; however, the rushing game of the Reading Express was much more productive than that of the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks, with 141 yards and 4 touchdowns versus the Steelhawks' 49 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Express was able to roll over the Steelhawks in the second half, which allowed for the victory of 63-58.
The Allen Wranglers stopped by Amarillo to compete against the Amarillo Venom Saturday evening. Both teams were looking to turn their luck around, hoping to win, and win consistently. The game turned out to be a very hard-fought game by both of the teams. In every quarter, except for one, they scored the same number of points; there was only a 4 yard difference in rushing yards, and an 18 yard difference in total yardage. The Amarillo defense played very hard against Allen with 6 sacks and 4 interceptions; however, the Wranglers were able to overcome the dominant defense of Amarillo to maintain their one point lead from the second quarter throughout the remainder of the game with a closing score of 52-51, Wranglers.
Another close encounter for Week 7 was between the Omaha Beef and the Sioux Fall Storm. These two teams are at the top of the Great Plains Division of the United Conference. The two top competitors played strongly against each other both putting up strong numbers. Omaha delivered 276 total offensive yards, 5 touchdowns, and a sack. While the Storm had 223 offensive yards, 6 touchdowns, and one sack as well. It appeared that the Omaha Beef would be victorious because they were able to capitalize on the 2 offensive mistakes of the Storm, 2 interceptions; however, the Storm was able to hold the Beef scoreless in the third quarter while they added 10 points to their score, which allowed the Storm to win 48-38.
The Nebraska Danger travelled to the La Crosse Spartans on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans got off to a very powerful start, scoring 37 points compared to the 10 points of the Danger. Coming back from halftime, the Danger knew that they had to play harder to get back into the game, which is just what they did; the Danger scored 21 more points, while preventing any scoring by the Spartans. By the beginning of the fourth quarter the score was at 37-31, Spartans, and the Danger had an opportunity to take the lead and win with a touchdown and extra point. However, both teams scored exactly 13 points each, which allowed the La Crosse Spartans to maintain their lead over the Nebraska Danger, and close out the game with a score of 50-44, La Crosse.
The final game or close encounter of week 7 was between the undefeated Colorado Ice and Bricktown Brawlers. The first quarter proved to be fairly unproductive for both teams scoring only 13 points collectively. However, by halftime the Colorado Ice pulled away from the Bricktown Brawlers with a score of 30-20. By the third quarter, it appeared that the Brawlers had hope, they held the Ice off from scoring, while taking 6 points for themselves; however, the tables were turned in the fourth quarter when the Brawlers were scoreless and the Ice scored 8 points. The Colorado Ice was able to overcome their 3 fumbles, and take 2 interceptions, which assisted in their victory over the Brawlers, 38-26.
