GREEN BAY -The Richmond Revolution (1-4) failed to pick up a win against the Green Bay Blizzard (4-1), 60-47. The loss came in front of 3,808 fans at Resch Center in an April Fool's Night Game.
"We kept it close for three quarters," said Revolution Head Coach Tony Hawkins. "In the end though we just couldn't make the plays necessary to finish it off. The guys played well in front of a hostile crowd. The five interceptions showed that the defense is beginning to turn around."
The Revolution started with the ball and were able to sustain a drive for the first five minutes of the game. The drive resulted in a 27-yard K Justin Parker (5-9, 175, Virginia State University) field goal and put the Revolution up 3-0 early.
The Blizzard, with former UVA star QB Jamell Sewell (6-3, 226, Virginia) under center, answered back on their first play from scrimmage as Sewell connected with Norfolk State's WR Chris Bell (6-3, 215, Norfolk State) for 30-yards and a touchdown.
The Revolution immediately answered back with a 47-yard kickoff return by WR Monte Purvis (6-0, 190, Winston-Salem State), which set-up a Brandon Jones (6-2, 200, Ohio) quarterback keeper for a touchdown, but only after Green Bay was called for three consecutive encroachment penalties which put the Revolution on the goal line.
Green Bay made a change at QB in the first half, replacing Sewell, after two consecutive interceptions with QB Willie Copeland (6-3, 225, Valdosta State) who helped right the ship for the Blizzard, leading them to a 40-33 halftime lead.
After the half Richmond got off to a great start thanks to WR/DB Josh Crawford (6-0, 185, Winston-Salem State), who started the half by intercepting the Copeland pass, and the followed it up by adding a touchdown of his own on the receiving end.
In the fourth quarter the Blizzard QB Willie Copeland took control running for one touchdown and passing for another to put the game out of reach despite a valiant effort the Blizzard offense was too much and the Revolution couldn't manage to score in the fourth quarter, leaving the final result 47-67.
Willie Copeland, coming on in relief of Jameel Sewelll led the game offensively, completing 29 passes on 45 attempts for 386 yards, and 7 touchdowns. He did throw three interceptions, including one to Richmond WR/DB Josh Crawford, who was all over the field while making his defensive debut, recording eight tackles, two interceptions, and catching two passes for 60 yards and two touchdowns.
The Revolution will be back home on April 9th at SportsQuest as the Revolution take on the Reading Express at 7:05 PM. The Revolution will be wearing purple uniforms for Cancer Awareness night and these uniforms will be auctioned off after the game.
