HARRISBURG, PA (March 29, 2011) - The Harrisburg Stampede thundered back from a 50-22 halftime deficit to take a 66-62 lead with 57 seconds to go on a 38-yard Kelvin Robinson to Abe Taylor touchdown strike, but surrendered the lead and the win with just 19 seconds to go on a 41-yard Fayetteville Force Lamar Little to Jay Jackson scoring toss.
The Force then added a blocked field goal attempt as time expired to seal a 75-66 victory on Sunday and drop the Stampede to 0-2.
The Force faithful had barely settled into their seats at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, North Carolina when Lamar Little found Chris Schubert deep on a 30-yard touchdown pass with just 26 seconds gone in the game to spot the Force an early 7-0 lead.
Little would find Schubert two more times in the quarter for scores and the Force QB would also add another touchdown toss to Walter Ford. The Stampede countered with two Kevin Robinson to Collis Martin scoring connections and at the end of the first quarter the scoreboard stood at Force 29 Stampede 14.
The Force continued their domination at the start of the second quarter as Little topped off a six-yard, 21-play drive with a two-yard TD run. The Stampede defense then earned a safety on an intentional grounding call on Little from the end zone to cut the Force margin to 36-16.
Eugene Goodman of the Stampede would post Harrisburg's only touchdown of the quarter, but his score was sandwiched by two more Little touchdown passes, one to Ford and one to Tymere Zimmerman, bringing Little's first half touchdown total to seven (six passing and one rushing) and the Force held what appeared to be an insurmountable 50-22 halftime margin.
As the second half started the Stampede appeared to have a renewed purpose and mounted an eight-play, 34-yard drive; finished off with a Robinson 13-yard scoring scamper. A J.R. Cipra extra point and a uno on the ensuing kickoff quickly shaved the Force lead to 58-30.
The defense then posted a stop and a Derek Scott 33-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left. The Stampede then took over at their 20 and Robinson led Harrisburg on a six-play, 30-yard drive topped off again with a Robinson to Martin score and a 58-36 Force lead.
A botched extra point attempt provided Fayetteville with two-points when Marcus Hicks returned the fumbled snap all the way for a score. The slight blip in the Stampede's momentum did not last long as on the Force's next possession Harrisburg's Jermaine Thaxton intercepted Little on first down and returned it 22-yards for the score.
This closed the Force lead to just 52-43 as the Stampede outscored Fayetteville 21-2 in the third quarter.
On the Force's first drive of the fourth quarter Thaxton hauled in his second interception of the game and provided the Stampede the ball at the Force four. Just one play later Robinson found Martin again, this time for a four-yard score and the Crown Coliseum crowd sat stunned as the
Stampede closed to within two at 52-50. The Force offense finally got going for the first time in the second half when Little rushed for four yards for a score to finish off a four-play, 30-yard drive and provide the Force some breathing room with a 59-50 lead.
Robinson then continued to dominate the Force defense as he orchestrated an 8-play, 44-yard drive. Robinson took to the ground for a ten-yard touchdown run and then added a short toss to Collis Martin to add the two-pointer and for the first time all day the Stampede was within one at 59-58.
On Fayetteville's next drive the Stampede defense held Little to three straight in completions, but Derek Scott kicked a 45-yard field goal to increase the Force lead to 62-58.
After a 15-yard kick return to the Harrisburg 12, Robinson led the offense on the field. After an incomplete to Martin on first down, Robinson uncorked a 38-score to Abe Taylor as Taylor unraveled his 6'4" frame to fully extend for the touchdown score as he fell into the end zone.
The Coliseum crowd was really stunned as the touchdown, extra point, and Cipra's uno suddenly gave the Stampede their first lead; a 66-62 edge with 57.1 seconds remaining in the game.
The Stampede lead did not hold for long as just 38 seconds later Little unleashed a 41-yard toss to a streaking Jay Jackson and despite the last ditch effort by the Stampede defender Jackson fell into the end zone with the winning score and a 69-66 lead.
Following a 15 yard return by Goodman the Stampede took over on their 13, but following a sack, a short rush by Robinson and a false start penalty, Cipra was forced to go for a 63-yard attempt, which was blocked and recovered by the Force in the end zone to provide the final margin of 75-66.
In leading the Stampede to 44 second half points and 66 for the night Kelvin Robinson was 15 of 36 passing for 210 yards and five touchdown passes against one interception. Robinson was also the Stampede's number one rusher netting 31 yards on 11 carries and scoring two touchdowns on the ground. Eugene Goodman also notched a one-yard scoring run.
Robinson's favorite receiving target was Collis Martin who had seven catches for 98 yards and four touchdowns. Archie Smith added four receptions for 69 yards. Abe Taylor had two receptions for 44 yards, including the score to take the lead with 57.1 seconds to go.
The Stampede was sparked defensively by Jermaine Thaxton who had two interceptions including one for a score. He also had 2.5 tackles and .5 tackles for loss. Richard Johnson was the leading Stampede tackler on the day with six. Newcomer Tay Wynn wrapped up three tackles.
Lamar Little compiled seven touchdown passes on 17 of 29 passing and threw two interceptions. Little also added two rushing touchdowns. Chris Schubert led all receivers on the day with nine receptions for 141 yards and had three touchdowns. Quinton Smith led the Force with 6.5 tackles.
Despite the great comeback with their 0-2 start the Stampede now face an important home game on Saturday, April 2nd at 7:30 PM against the Richmond Raiders (1-1).
