The Green Bay Blizzard won 61-50 Friday night in their home opener behind a solid performance from return specialist B.J. Hill and a second half spark from newly acquired quarterback Jameel Sewell.
Green Bay (2-1) struggled to find much offense in the first half, but received a heavy lift from Hill who scored two touchdowns in the second quarter. The first was a 49-yard kickoff return following an Extreme touchdown. The second was a 58-yard touchdown return on a missed Extreme field goal attempt by Steven Fetzer.
Despite the return efforts, the Blizzard still trailed at the half 16-14.
Hill continued his efforts when he returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a 46-yard touchdown to put Green Bay ahead 20-16.
Bloomington (3-1) responded by adding a 25-yard touchdown pass by quarterback Rocky Hinds to regain the lead 23-20 with 13:18 remaining in the third quarter.
Hill returned yet another missed field-goal attempt by Fetzer 58 yards for a touchdown, his fourth on the night, igniting the crowd and putting the Blizzard ahead 27-23.
Jameel Sewell, who replaced Willie Copeland at quarterback in the second half, got the offense on the scoreboard. He connected with a diving Agim Shabaj on a 16-yard pass to increase the Blizzard lead to 34-23 with 3:20 remaining in the third quarter.
After the Extreme responded once again, Sewell scrambled out of the pocket, evaded the rush and ran 13 yards on a quarterback keeper for a touchdown.
Sewell added another touchdown in the second half, a 19-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Rhea, giving him two touchdowns passes and one rushing touchdown for the game.
A pair of touchdown runs by wide receiver Lonnie Sanders (1 yard) and Andrew Verboncouer (11 yards) helped hold off the Extreme and sealed the victory for the Blizzard.
Next week, the Blizzard travel to Grand Island, Neb. to face the expansion Nebraska Danger.
