Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo Venom fell at the hand of they Wyoming Cavalry in dramatic fashion Friday night at Coors Light Field in Amarillo.
The Venom struggled offensively once again in the first half as they put up just 6 points in the first half on a 1-yard touchdown run by Landrick Brody. The 6 points were all the Venom were able to muster up in the first half as they went in to the locker room trailing 20-6 at the break
The second half was a different story for the Venom. The Venom would open the second half with the football and would just need one play to match their first half total. The first play from scrimmage in the second half was a 38-yard touchdown pass from X'Zavier Bloodsaw to Ross Roby making the score 20-13 in favor of the Cavalry.
The defense would come up big on the first offensive series of the second half for the Cavalry as the Cavalry would fail to get a first down would turn the ball over on downs at their own 10-yard line. This time it would take just three plays for the Venom to score as Bloodsaw would run it in from 1-yard out evening the score at 20-20 with 10:30 left in the 3rd quarter.
After a couple of traded field goals, the Venom had the lead 26-23 until 2:45 in the 4th quarter when Joe McClain hooked up with Joe Newson for a 33-yard touchdown pass giving the Cavalry a 30-26 advantage.
The Venom would come right back though and drive the length of the field. With a little over 50 seconds left in the game, the Venom would face a 4th and 15 from the Cavalry 16-yard line. With fans on their feet, Bloodsaw was able to complete a 16-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Clark in double coverage to give the Venom back the lead, 33-30, with 47 seconds to go.
47 seconds was too much time though as Wyoming's McClain was able to complete a 5-yard touchdown pass to Ayrius Justin with 15 seconds left to give the Cavalry the lead for good 37-33. The Venom would have a chance after a nice return by DonTa Bright set the Venom up at the Cavalry 15-yard line. A couple plays later the Venom had one last chance from the 5-yard line with 2 seconds remaining, but they were unable to score.
Up next for the Venom is the West Texas Rough Necks, as the Venom travel to Odessa Friday, March 25th. The Venom are back at home April 2nd when they host the Allen Wranglers.
