HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY - After a slow start, the Northern Kentucky River Monsters exploded for 79 points as they defeated Johnstown Friday, 79-21, at the Bank of Kentucky Center in Ultimate Indoor Football League action in front of 2,910 fans.
The River Monsters took control of the game with five straight touchdowns, by four different players, over the end of the second and beginning of the third quarters. Receiver Willie Idlette had catches of six and 20 yards during the game deciding run.
While Jared Lorenzen and the gang was running roughshod over the Johnstown offense, the Northern Kentucky defensive line was harassing Generals quarterback Jeff Slatcoff. The defense, which was ranked last in the UIFL, recorded 10 sacks. Thomas McKenzie recorded a team-high 4.5, while Luke Scarborough added three sacks.
"The guys were just walking through the plays," said head coach Rodney Swanigan. "I had to light a fire. The defense has been struggling all season long. Then Tez (Morris) came out and made that big hit on the 25, and we took off from there."
Linebacker Santino Turnbow, who also recovered a fumble for a touchdown, led the team with 11 tackles and one sack. Kenneth Joshen and Jon D'Angelo added 10 tackles.
Offensively, Lorenzen threw for a season-high 325 yards on 18-of-27 passing with seven touchdowns and three interceptions.
"It's so much easier when you have a guy that will reinforce your philosophy," Swanigan said of the left-handed quarterback. "To (our team), that guy has a Super Bowl ring and they see every day, and understand, what excellence takes."
For the second time this season, Idlette and Ricardo Lenhart tallied 100-yard games. They are the only pair of teammates to achieve the feat in the league.
Idlette finished with 10 catches for 134 yards and four touchdowns, while Lenhart had five catches for 118 yards and a touchdown.
Northern Kentucky improved to 3-1 on the season, and will return home on 7:30 p.m. March 28 against the Canton Cougars.
