The Trenton Steel Indoor Football Team cut its roster to 23 players, getting down the Southern Indoor Football League limit. The Steel will open its season at Richmond March 19.
For each SIFL game, the Steel will have 20 active players and a three-man reserve squad. Wide receiver Najeh Pruden was placed on the Injured Reserve List and is not on the active roster.
The first week of training camp at the Metuchen SportsPlex brought several new faces to the Steel roster, including:
Offensive lineman Mike Trice, a 6-foot-5, 320-pounder from Hofstra.
Defensive lineman Mike Bibbs, at 6-foot-4, 264, is a former Iowa State star who spent time in the Green Bay Packers camp.
Wide receiver Ronald Keels Jr., a speedy 5-foot-10 performer from Gannon University.
Defensive Lineman Terrance Banks, a 6-foot-1, 276-pounder who played at Jackson State.
Wide receiver Antoine Rivera, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound native of Willingboro, N.J., who played at St. Francis (Pa.).
Two of the Steel’s key players have Mercer County roots. Quarterback E.J. Nemeth, who played at Notre Dame High and Sacred Heart University, and led the Baltimore Mariners of the American Indoor Football Association to an undefeated season in 2010. Defensive lineman Eric Bullock, a former star at Trenton Central High and Norfolk State, will be in the center of it all for the Steel.
Versatile Dan Huff, who has impressed the coaching staff in training camp, will see action as a starting wide receiver and back up Nemeth at quarterback. Huff was a collegiate quarterback at FDU-Florham. The wide-receiver corps could be strong, with former University of Pittsburgh stalwart and Teaneck, N.J., native Oderick Turner in the fold.
Turner, whose father, Odessa, who played seven NFL seasons with the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers, is one of a few Steel players with Family NFL connections. Running backs Keon Lattimore, a former Maryland star, is the younger brother of Baltimore Ravens star Ray Lewis, while Craig Heyward Jr., who played at Middle Tennessee, is the son of the late Craig Hayward, the Passaic, N.J., native who died of cancer in 2006. Heyward had an 11-year NFL career in which he established himself as one of the league’s best “big man’’ running backs.
Practice will continue next week at the Metuchen SportsPlex, as the Steel prepare for their opener at Richmond.
