You could sense that the defense, who held the potent North TX Crunch attack to only 9 points in the 2010 I.I.F.A. Championship game - picking off Derrick Dickerson three times after he had only been picked off twice all year would make a strong statement.
The Green team dominated the game for three quarters, and then the White team stormed back in the fourth quarter forcing the game into overtime. The green teamsf defense rose to the occasion in overtime and pulled out the win. The Green vs. White football games rewards the defense and offense for doing certain things right. The Pirates gave friends and family a great preview of whatfs to come in the 2011 season.
With that, let's go over some positives and negatives:
Thumbs Up
QB Taylor Wallis and Ernest Mason looked sharp as usual, but when you through in the elusive Josh Booker it will make you pick your poison.
Coach Manos sings the praise of the Offense:
"Making the move from WR to RB, Armando Lopez has been exceptional and has had a great off season," Manos said.@ "The offense is really starting to step up and make plays consistently."
The second half of the game, the White Team really appeared to utilize the new weapons that Pirates acquired in the off season. WRfs Anthony Saineclaire, Andrew Lindner, QB Jamal Ibrahim, and Former Kennedale standout Rex Harper the offense seems to be solid and elusive as usual.
The starting offensive line showed some flashes. William Hester and Daniel Vasquez started as expected. However, Jahmikal Edwards was a surprise start at the left guard. I guess all the hype about him is true, he looked phenomenal. They still have some work to do though (that will be addressed below).
The defense gets thumbs up in general. They played amazing. They forced 3 turnovers and scored a touchdown.
The Green Machine wound up with 2 interceptions, including a pick six down the west sideline in overtime to steal the game.
The defense swarmed to the ball and not a lot of the safeties or corners have great stat lines because the defensive line and the linebackers were so dominant. The return of Linebackers Derrick Wageneck, Nathan Robinson, and DT John Clark had 6 tackles a piece including a tackle for a loss. The safeties seemed to not get tested a lot, and when they were, all the quarterbacks were throwing away from second year Free Safety Ryan Mulhmanfs side, maybe they're trying to keep him from headhunting his own team.
Thumbs Down
The offensive line definitely lost the battle in the trenches. Granted, they were going up against an excellent defensive line, but still there was a lot left to be desired. The first string offensive line looked OK, but on the first series gave up sacks on 2nd and 3rd down, not good. The running game was stagnant, probably because of the new personnel. They looked a little uncertain hitting the holes. The other problem was there were times where there weren't any holes, just a lot of defenders staring them in the face. Like I said, "At times it wasn't pretty, but that could just be our defensive line's talent."
