HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY - For the first of four meetings with Eastern Kentucky, Northern Kentucky is prepared to throw something a little different at the Drillers. (Game Notes )
Cincinnati native Aric Evans scored five touchdowns in Eastern Kentucky's season opening victory, and currently leads the Ultimate Indoor Football League (UIFL) with seven touchdowns.
In fact, Evans has pulled down seven of the team's 10 passing touchdowns.
But, the River Monsters (2-0) could have a wrinkle or two for the Drillers.
The team has added defensive back Butch Abshire to allow them to be more athletic in the defensive backfield. In addition, there is a battle at the linebacker position and veteran Wallace Morris could see his first action of the season.
"(Incumbent) Santino (Turnbow) has done a fantastic job in the first two games as a rookie," said head coach Rodney Swanigan. "But it could be time to give Wallace a chance and give our defense a little different look."
Coming off a bye week, Eastern Kentucky (1-1) had two weeks to prepare for the UIFL's top scoring offense. The Drillers, who are fifth in the six-team league, in passing defense could have their hands full with the NKY receiving trio of Harry Lewis, Willie Idlette and Ricardo Lenhart. Each of the three receivers has recorded a 100-yard game for the River Monsters, including Lewis' 151-yard effort last week against Johnstown.
Much like last week when the Johnstown defensive line was the heartbeat of the Generals' defense, the EKY line makes the Drillers engine run. They main cog in the engine is rookie Shaun Jones. He is second on the team with 11 tackles.
"Having to play against those two lines back to back could be good for us," said Swanigan.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Eastern Kentucky Exposition Center in Pikeville, Kentucky.
